Author's Note: My first post over here. Finally. :-)

Nelly looks up when she hears the bird screeching, the sun blinding her for a moment. Bringing up her hand, to shield her eyes from the sun, she tries to find the bird above her. The shrieking reminded her of something... Something she can't put her finger on. Something old. And something new. Something important...

Her eyes narrow. There is no bird... The only thing she can see is the clear blue sky. And one little cloud. It's nothing more but a tiny veil.

She closes her eyes for a second. Taking a deep breath. There is a feint smell of mint in the air. Another thing that seemingly seems to mean something to her. Something...

There is a small smile on her lips when she looks down again. Even though there are tears in her eyes.

"Silly me."

She shakes her head, brushing away the little drops of salt water. Wondering what this feeling of loss and sadness deep inside her mean.

"Madam."

The voice next to her startles her. Not because she hadn't seen him approach. But because of the ice cold tone.

Turning she looks straight in the face of one of the guards. The blood red cape flying wildly because of the wind.

"Sorry."

She bows her head. Clasps her hands together before her belly.

The guard doesn't have to speak for her to hear what's coming next.
Move, or else...

The threat hangs crystal clear in the air.

"Sorry."

Head still bowed and hands still clasped together she shuffles a couple of steps backwards. Before she straightens and, without looking the guard in the eyes, turns and walks away. It takes all her willpower not to start running. She'd definately be arrested if she did...

An ice cold chill runs down her spine when she passes the walls of the capital city. Hidden deep within its layers of streets and houses stands the black castle. Hated by most. Feared by everyone.

Speeding up she wants nothing more than to be home. Safely home. Although ... Safe... It is a word that has lost all meaning in this world.

Looking around she immediately spots the guards. It's not difficult. The red capes are not something you can overlook... After all, only the guards and the king are allowed to wear anything of that color. It is forbidden for everybody else.

For a moment it seems as if they all know. As if they all are following her with their eyes. As if ...

Taking a deep breath, Nelly forces her eyes away from the red capes. She used to love the color. Until it became his.

She repeats the words in her head. "They can't know. They don't know. They can't know..." If only to try and reassure herself. If only to convince herself. She knows however that the guards have very quick ways to communicate with one other.

It are only five minutes later when she arrives at her house. Quickly she steps inside. Locking the door behind her. She lets her back lean against the wooden door. Eyes closed, face directed towards the ceiling. And it terrifies her that she is still shivering. There used to be a time these guards didn't scare her.

Opening her eyes again. A hunted look in her crystal blue orbs.

She doesn't understand her thoughts, her feelings - of course she has always been scared of the guards. She doesn't understand the urge to run away. Hard and fast and ... away. Far far away.

"Away..."

She tries to taste the word in her mouth.

"Sure."

A humorless chuckle leaves her lips.

"And where to Nelly? Where would you go to?"

There are strange pictures in her head. Places she has never seen before. And yet they all seem so incredibly familiar. And real.

Taking a deep breath, she shakes her head.

"Enough. Enough already."

She balls her hands to fists when she recognizes the feint smell of mint again. Her anger so sudden, that she doesn't even notice how her nails are piercing her skin a little. Little drops of blood falling on the ground.

"Please. Whoever you are. Whatever you are. Leave me alone!"

She nearly yells. The fear for the guards however, makes sure she doesn't.

Sobbing she sets herself down on the ground. Her back still against the door. Pulling up her legs, her arms circling her knees, her face hidden in her arms.

The turmoil of emotions too big. She doesn't even notice she falls asleep some minutes later.

I agree that this is an interesting start, and would like to add that it's a good depiction of a cascading trigger. Nice job.

I feel bad for her, being so terrified. It's no wonder she had a breakdown, living with as much fear as she seems to be.
