Newsprint #1, Psychedelic Purple #14: For the Coat (Lin Moniao Series)
Name: For the Coat
Story: Lin Moniao Series (AO3 link)
Colors: Newsprint #1 (All things are delicately interconnected.), Psychedelic Purple #14 (do you promise not to tell?)
Supplies and Styles: gesso, novelty beads (Behind her, the noise escalated), seed beads; postcard
Word Count: 193
Rating: teen
Warnings: Some off-screen, non-lethal violence and a casual attitude towards thereof.
Summary: Zeng Xiaohui and Song Dongmei work well together; or at least the former works well with the latter. A little contextless vignette.
*
Behind her, the noise escalated. Zeng Xiaohui padded carefully a few steps further into the shadow of a wide eave across the street, where the lights of the inn did not reach, and turned back to wait and see.
A moment later, Song Dongmei staggered out, brushing off her sleeves. "A fat lot of help you were," she said to her partner.
"I just got this coat," Xiaohui retorted, brushing it down: a pretty little affair embroidered with stylized birds. "I knew you could handle a simple drinking-hall brawl."
Song Dongmei huffed and wiped her mouth, leaving behind a trail of blood from her fist. Really, she was pleased, both for the compliment and for the opportunity for righteous violence that would not end up in their reports to the bureau. She wouldn't say so, though. Some people were like that.
"I'm so sorry," said Zeng Xiaohui, not meaning it for a moment, and threaded her arm through Song Dongmei's. "Come on, let's get back to the inn. I'll share my melon seeds, how's that?"
"You always share your melon seeds."
"I'm just a terribly generous person."
"You don't like melon seeds."
"Shh."
