The city’s dark alleys, without even the moon to illuminate them, forced Sera to stumble behind Timur. They had shaken off the holy knights of the mages’ prison in the deep forest, but now, days after, they found themselves inside of city walls.

It wasn’t the Holy City of Remiel, Timur had explained, but it was a start. His mysterious master awaited in the Holy City, but for now, Sera needed to gather supplies for the journey.

“I wonder if he was wrong about you,” Timur complained, after he’d jumped on a would-be mugger’s head to chase him away, when Sera had ventured into a dead-end.

Sera ignored the cat. She didn’t trust him, but she supposed she owed him, after he had ensured her freedom. It remained to be seen whether she would end up thanking him or cursing him for the assistance, however. Her eyes betrayed her curse, and she could never forget the scars on her hands. Or on her memory.

Sera had no money and no supplies. So she resigned herself to a night in the street. She found a quiet corner to lean against the brick wall of a building and tried to close her eyes. The warm air ensured she didn’t freeze for lack of shelter, at least.

“Not much worse than my cell,” she told Timur, who grumbled and curled up beside her. Her stomach growled; pretty soon she’d have to take Timur up on his offer to catch them something to eat, as much as she hated the idea. Or she’d have to steal food and risk losing a hand or ending up in prison again.

She’d only just nodded off when Timur’s growls awakened her. She opened her eyes, and a large, rough hand pushed the cat aside. A big, burly man pawed at her tunic.

“Your money,” he spat. “Or wantin’ that, your shoes will do.” She froze, terrified, and blinked in the stench of the man’s breath.

A knife flashed in the dark, and the man cursed, running away with thudding footsteps.

Sera held her breath, and suddenly a glow of crystalline blue light illuminated the darkness and her savior’s face.

A woman’s face peered at her from beneath a black hood. Sera caught a glimpse of dark eyes reflecting the light of the glowcrystal and chin-length black hair.

“Thank you,” Sera said, as the woman’s gaze swept over her and Timur.

“Save your thanks; I could be another thief for all you know,” the woman remarked. She smirked, then reached down and pulled a knife from her boot. “Without weapons, you’re a sitting duck around here.” Sera took the knife that the woman offered, though it appeared dull compared to the weapon had used to attack the man. She felt her face grow warm as she turned the knife over in her hands.

“You still saved us,” Sera pointed out. “What can I do to repay you?”

“I suppose I can’t just let a little bird like yourself go all alone in a place like this,” the woman said. She stuck out her hand, and Sera shook it hesitantly. “Name’s Deirdre,” the woman said. “Pleasure.” She smiled slightly, eyes still full of cold blue light.

“I’m Sera.” Sera suddenly felt extremely conscious of her disheveled clothes and hair. “Is that magic?” She nodded at the crystal in Deirdre’s hands.

“What, this old thing?” Deirdre laughed, waving a hand over the crystal so it went dark. “A primitive ice spell. Nothing too exciting, I assure you.” She gave Sera a long, skeptical look, and once again, Sera blushed. “Where have you been all my life?”

She handed the crystal to Sera, who took it gently and gasped. The crystal felt like a shard of ice, yet her hands did not melt it, nor warm its chill.

“Amazing,” she whispered.

“They come in handy,” Deirdre said, “though you have to have an affinity for ice magic to use them. Other glowcrystal types exist though. Crystals of light, water, even plant magic.” She put it away once Sera handed it back to her. “Don’t suppose you’re a mage, are you?”

Sera felt grateful that Deirdre had extinguished the light, as she could look away and hide her expression in the night’s shadows.

“No,” she said. She felt Timur brush against her legs, as if to tell her that he, of course, knew the truth.

Deirdre took her arm, stepping close enough that Sera could see her smile. “No matter. I don’t mind helping out a fellow stray. Come with me.”

And Sera did.

More mysteries! And I like the glimpse of some of the magic available in this world here, too.

I took off the novelty beads tag - you'll get beads from writing this. Novelty beads are prompts for you to use later!

Tags added. Please let me know if I messed up; I'm only about 50% awake.

Hmmm. Why do I feel that Deirdre maybe doesn't have the best of intentions... I hope she does for Sera's sake.

If you're tracking supplies, this would count as modeling clay (I try to keep the stuff on the tumblr tagged, but I don't always manage to)
