There was nothing for Reuben on the east coast, so he moved up to Canada and stayed for a while, until the nights got too close and sweaty for reasons that had nothing to do with the weather, and then where was he to go but back south, through places that wanted him dead, chasing an address on an old postcard he'd found taped to the wall of a bathroom, still looking for some distillation of life into a meaningful moment that meant he'd finally be done searching.

Henry didn't call in sick, he just turned off his phone and opened a pack of cigarettes, and watched the daylight slowly turning from one side of his house to the other.

The sound of the chainsaw reverberated through the house, aggression made audible, drowning out words, and sure it was art, sure it was for learning wood sculpture, but it was also to shut Amber up and put her in her place, and it worked: Her place was on his motorcycle, going fast down the highway, his money and his phone in her purse, already forgetting all about his chiseled abs and the past two months in this goddamn hick town.

The sun touched the far horizon, highlighting just how far Jimmy's land reached from his porch, and when his fingers found the strings of his guitar and the first twang startled a chicken, his heart felt almost at peace; almost clean.

Dreams, scruples, compassion, philosophy--Pru shrugged it all away; being a lawyer was just like that.

Holmes, Gordon & Gibbs did not own the entire block, neither was their name written out big and flashy on the side, but once through the double doors the sign listing the companies in this office building made sure you knew: This was the house of Violet Holmes.

It took a while for Phyllida to give up the idea of pretending; really, she had tried so hard for so long, for nothing but pride; silly, really--things were so much better now that she had her place and Chucks had his and neither of them had to put up with the other's nonsense.

Henry's kitchen was always clean and always in order, like everything in his life he could easily control, the appliances taken apart and cleaned after every use, and once a month he took down everything and spent a day just going through it all to make sure it was perfect; and if anything had a flaw or a fault that he could not fix, into the bin it went, no longer welcome.

Henry had a reoccurring dream, which got worse when the weather was hot, of staring down a shimmering small town street at a man whose face was hidden in the shadow of his hat, his hand hovering over the handle of his weapon, and something in him telling him he did not want that man to look up and stare him down with his own eyes.

Cameron's got his best clothes on, thank you spring sales, and he's got a date with a tall-dark-handsome in a business suit, and so the bills can stand a little longer in the little keybowl in the hallway.

Henry can tell Phyl thinks he's all better now that he's dressing up and showing up and yelling at waiters again, just like the old days, and chasing a different tail every night instead of getting hung up, but she should know by now: This isn't better, just different.
