Larien moved quickly, without running; down the gallery and out the little side door he and Idan had been so sure was their secret when they were children.

(It wasn't, of course; but it still made for a discreet exit when needed.)

He could still feel the faint beat of Metanrye's pulse under his fingertips; the pressure of her lips against his; the soft longing in her eyes.

Fuck.

He made it out to the gardens and slowed down. Took a breath.

He had been lucky, he knew; luckier than most princes--or princesses--married to seal a treaty. He had only to look at his own parents to know that much. He liked Tsimany well enough. She was kind and clever and gracious, and would adapt enough to Elanhe to be a good queen.

He didn't love her, and he wasn't sure he ever would, but that didn't matter, not really. One didn't enter a marriage like this expecting love.

And comparing that--respect, even fondness, to what he felt for Metanrye...

Here.

He'd reached his favorite quiet spot; unlikely to be disturbed especially at this time of night. Abandoning any pretense of decorum, he sprawled on the grass, staring up at the stars.

They stared back down at him, cold and distant and withholding judgment. For the moment.

It wasn't purely physical. He'd considered that for a while, watching her ever since she had come to court. There was a physical attraction, he was hardly going to deny that, but this went...somewhat deeper.

Metanrye, too, was clever. And she was steadfast; there was this...quality to her. Once she gave her loyalty, it was unshakeable. She saw much, said little, came to her own conclusion. And the way she smiled, the way she laughed, the wry subtlety to her own humor...

No. Not purely physical. If it was, it might have been simpler.

He had promised--himself, at least, if not Tsimany directly, that, while she had not and might never win his heart, he would do her the courtesy of not giving it to another. His mind and body, of course, belonged to Elanhe, and he would use those and conduct what affairs were necessary for his kingdom. But his heart...his heart he would hold back.

He had failed. He had been failing for weeks, and he and Metanrye had crossed a line in the gallery tonight, because she loved him, too. The thought of losing her was...

It might happen eventually, of course. Even the most intense, devoted, loyal affairs of the heart might fade.

But for now...for now, he was here. And she was here. And Tsimany...

Do I tell her?

Stupid question. She would find out one way or another anyway; if he couldn't hold back entirely, surely the kinder thing would be to tell her himself, privately.

...not tonight, he decided. Not tonight. Soon, I know. I--we--cannot hold this secret for long. But tonight...

He closed his eyes, afterimages of starlight dancing on his eyelids; the faint taste of Metanrye's kiss dancing on his tongue.

I can keep this to myself for one more night.
