Summary: Tarana and Sol find the more extreme side to admiration of the Creator Three. (This is the first entry for Chronicles of Tydas so I'd love to have a tag for it. Just Tydas is fine.)
The moon gave beams down onto the otherwise darkened Koylin Forest, going between trees and illuminating the dirt path that Tarana and Sol were walking on quietly, leading their horses behind them. They had made it to this forest after a long day of traveling on Amatage and Besnik, and wanting to take it easy on the steeds; they opted to use their feet instead in search of a place to camp.
“I’m getting a little hungry…” Tarana said, finally breaking the silence with her complaint, glancing over at Sol, who gave a nod while trying to ignore the gnawing in his own stomach. “We’ll rest soon, Moonbeam. I want to survey around here first. Make sure it’s safe.”
Hearing that confused Tarana, who used her eyes to look around. She heard nor saw anything and shrugged. “It doesn’t seem like anybody is…”
“Shh!”
Sol put his arm out to the side to halt Tarana in her step. She looked down at it before glancing ahead just as a hooded figure ran across the path a good length ahead of them as quickly as a shadow, making her gasp. Sol, meanwhile, frowned. It looked to him that it was a regular person and not a shadow magic creature, so he put a finger to his lips to inform Tara to keep quiet.
After seeing her nod, he grabbed the reins of both horses, tying them up to a tree nearby. His eyes met Tarana’s before he asked, “Do you want to follow me? It might be dangerous.” Tara didn’t hesitate. “I’m curious to see what that was. Was it a person?”
“We’ll soon find out. Come on.”
The two then parted from their horses and started walking in the direction where they saw the figure run. Deeper into the forest they went, but strange enough, Sol realized that it wasn’t getting darker…it was getting brighter. This was a result of a clearing appearing before them where the light of the moon was able to shine down to its full potential. This was how Sol could see not only the one being but now a group of ten people. They wore black cloaks with what appeared to be white wings on the back.
A sudden alarm hit Sol, and he grabbed Tarana’s arm to bring her down into a nearby brush. “What? What’s wrong, Sol?” She whispered. Her eyes took in the group. They sat silently in a circle in the middle of the clearing, but the aura she could sense from them made her stomach churn. They weren’t normal, for sure.
“Who are they?”
“Wings of Lumina,” Sol whispered, his eyes focused on them. “They are a group that claims to be religious towards Lumina, going about in different places trying to bring knowledge about the moon creator.” His eyes then glance down at Tara, his gaze telling her that wasn’t the case. “They are more a cult, doing things that contradict their claims. They can be quite dangerous.”
The two focused their sights back on the group just as they all began lowering their hoods, revealing what looked to be normal-looking human beings. Only one man sat in the circle holding what looked to be a manuscript that he was muttering softly from.
“Bring them out.”
At the louder volume of his voice one of the others stood with a cage in his hand where soft squeals came from. Tarana squinted her eyes to see what creatures were inside of it, the dread growing larger inside of her. Something truly wasn’t right about what was going on here. When the one member sat back down, Sol and Tarana widened their eyes.
“Dragons. They’re holding hatchlings.” Tarana whispered looking at Sol who could only frown in confusion. Indeed, each member held what looked like ten small black dragons.
Why on Tydas would they have such sacred beings? Tydian law stated that dragons weren’t to be bothered with as they directly represented the Creators Three.
“Oh, Holy Lumina. We come to you under the light of the moon in worship of you. We wish to be blessed by you, to be acknowledged by you and with this sacrifice of these wretched dark dragons, we hope we will please you enough to bring us into your winged embrace, taking us into your peaceful Lunar Realm.”
Before Tarana could even get up to protest what was about to happen, she gripped her neck suddenly in slight pain as agonized screeches sounded out all over the clearing. “Tara?” Sol turned seeing her falling to her knees before his own throat felt as if a knife were cutting against it. He grunted, holding it before turning to see what the cult was up to. Each hatchling were getting their throats slashed and before any of their precious dark blood could be dropped, the members brought the slain beings to their mouths to drink it.
“No.” Tarana managed to get out through a raspy voice. Sol held on to her to keep her steady, terror filling his being at how delusional this group was.
In moments the Wings of Lumina went from a silent group to something even more disturbing as their eyes clouded over and their expressions went blank.
“What’s wrong with them, Sol?”
“They’re hallucinating. It’s the blood. Even hatchlings have mythical components in it.”
“Even so…this is terrible. I can’t stand to watch it.” Tarana replied getting up and heading toward the group.
“Tara, no!” Sol hissed out, still holding his neck, but his companion was too quick, darting towards the group and holding her arms out. “Stop this!” She exclaimed.
Slow turns of heads moved her way, gazes still blank as the members regarded the new intruder. Hatchling bodies fell to the ground by their feet in muffled thumps as they all stood holding daggers used to kill their sacrifices. Tara took a step back with a whimper, hating that she left her arrows with Besnik.
Sol however, sprang into action as soon as he saw them heading towards his woman and with a flick of his hand he shot a ball of fire between her and the Wings of Lumina, halting the group enough for him to hurry behind Tarana, scoop her into his arms and run off, saying to her in an irritated rough voice, “Next time…you listen, woman.”
Nodding Tarana buried her face in his chest. “That was terrifying, Sol. Why would they do that?”
“I don’t know, Tarana. But one thing is for sure: We’re going to have to keep a closer eye on them. For the sake of dragons and for Tydas.”
