Summary: North Easterners away in Portcallan must always stick together.

“Governor Delver,” said someone who was almost certainly one of the Secretaries to the Regional Council, to North Eastern’s current Regional Governor. “Allow me to introduce you to Imai Viyony Eseray, who is a compatriot of yours. From North Eastern, that is,” he added hastily.

“For a moment there,” Marran Delver said, “I thought you were implying that we weren’t also Emoyrans.” He turned to Viyony, breaking into a smile, as he held out his hand to her. “There’s no need. Imai Eseray and I are old acquaintances – although I’m not sure if she’ll remember.”

Viyony took his hand, smiling in return, while the anonymous official edged away. “Of course I do. I wondered when I first heard the name if it could be the same person – but after you started stealing everyone’s farms in order to grow sunplants, I knew it could hardly be anyone else.”

“Ah,” he said, and glanced briefly downwards. “There you have me. Not one of my supporters, then?”

“On the contrary – very much so. I’ll have to tell you about some of the work we’ve been doing at Eseray. I think you’ll be interested – but, of course, not in the middle of a social occasion. I’m sure you’ve talked enough of serious matters already in Council.”

Marran turned his gaze outward, to the other people milling around the brightly lit hall, draped in starflowers and gold strands in honour of the day. “Dear me. And I’d assumed that was all this sort of thing was for.”

“Oh, no,” Viyony said. “As bad as that? Well, I would be delighted to talk you to death on the subject now that I have your attention. But first – you must tell me at least something of how you came to –” She paused. Then her lips quivered and she cast an amused look up at him. “Well, last time I saw you, you were still such an absurd boy.”

Marran’s formal mask broke. He laughed. “You would go so far as to say absurd, would you?”

“Well,” said Viyony. She held out her hands – it’s not my fault it’s the truth. “Maybe I remember more than you do.”

“I suppose I’ll have to concede the point,” he said, waving away a waiter with a tray.

Viyony, in turn, took a glass with a short nod of thanks. “Gracious of you.”

“It isn’t all that interesting a story,” he said. “Rather long and not always entirely edifying. Whereas I’ve been told several times I should take the time to speak to someone from Eseray – I apologise for not managing it before now.”

Viyony shifted to one side to allow a purposeful figure in a blue robe to pass as they marched through the crowd with little attention to other people. “It is rather ridiculous to have to come all the way to Portcallan to meet, I agree.”

“I certainly didn’t expect to see you here.”

Viyony lowered her glass and surveyed the room, the amused light fading out of her face. “Yes,” she agreed, pleasantly. “It has been a long time.”

“Anything in particular to bring you so far?”

“Unfinished business,” she said. She gave him a wry look. “What else?”

What else indeed. I'm glad these two seem to like each other! But it's court, so who actually knows.
