The thing about life at sea was that, while there were adventures to be had and combat to engage in and danger to face, between those bright spots of activity, there were many very monotonous, repetitive, routine tasks; and when crossing the Broad Sea between the Islands and the continent, there might be nothing new on the horizon for days on end.

So, the sailors, and their Captain, and their navigator, found ways to pass the time. Gambling, flirting--or more--in dark corners, little crafts that didn’t take much space.

Petty feuds, too; though a good Captain--and Taz Hantree, despite her youth, was a very good Captain--kept a weather eye out for those and nipped them in the bud.

It wasn’t all that different from the long, dark night of winter in the North, Dallu has found. A similar sense of being crowded in together, cut off from other peoples, and finding distractions when there wasn’t an immediate task to occupy the mind.

And, especially now that he and Taz were together, Dallu considered it part of his role to help keep his Captain on an even keel.

…well. Much as she ever was, anyway.

It started with little gifts; surprises for her to find as she went about her day. Little scraps of brightly colored fabric or shell to make her smile.

But some part of him, perhaps influenced by his Captain’s flair for drama and chaos, kept whispering…is that enough?

Eventually, of course, he gave in. His routine might not have been quite as monotonous as the sailors’--navigators were outside the regular chain of command--but he got bored, too, on occasion.

So he started to add a little flair to his surprises.

Like the time she opened a hatch to be greeted by a carefully-prepared flash of chill early morning air.

Or when she picked up one of the shells he’d hidden and got a brief jolt of static along with it (that one took very careful setup, to make sure the energy wouldn’t set off actual sparks).

His favorite, though, was the scrap of fabric in her very favorite bright turquoise that he had managed to spell into being magnetic. Most of her jewelry, of course, was gold, so it didn’t stick to that. But it clung determinedly to the hilt of her sword.

She tracked him down, pretending to be annoyed, but he could hear the laughter in her voice as she insisted he undo it.

Which he did, of course.

And he couldn’t help but notice that, within a day or so, she finished off the rough edges of the scrap and tied it around the sheath as a kind of banner, where it wouldn’t be so in the way.

A very good day’s work, he thought.

…although--and perhaps this should have occurred to him sooner--by opening this particular door, he had given her an opportunity to retaliate in kind.

…this is going to be a very interesting trip, he thought, grinning to himself as he--very, very carefully--pushed open the door of their shared cabin--

Not carefully enough.

A bucket of tinted water spilled over him, soaking into his pale hair, leaving it dyed a much fainter shade of that same turquoise that his Taz so loved.

…worth it, he decided, as he wiped the water away from his eyes. Absolutely worth it. The real question now is what should I do next…

THis is fun! I like both the scenario you paint, of the monotonous days trapped on ships, and then the fun/sweet pranks - and lol at the inevitable revenge at the end! Very nice. :-D
