“Does it bother you?” Telri asked, one night, late in her pregnancy. “Staying away from your home like this, I mean.”

Isshiri paused for a moment, giving the question some true thought.

He had spent most of his adult life wandering, travelling from one end of the great continent to the other. But still--he wasn’t rootless. When he pictured ‘home,’ he did still picture the constantly-shifting towers of the City of Glass, shimmering out of the desert sands at dawn.

But he also pictured Nolani, who was in Feredar half the time, with Andrell, who also came to mind after a moment. And Kira, strange and distant as his little sister was. And Taz, though the North was one of the few places he hadn’t traveled. And Mel, who was…long gone.

And Telri. His wife, his love, his partner. The first person he’d really opened himself to since the War. (The relationships with Andrell and Taz and especially Mel, forged in that kind of fire, were something…something unique to being from that time.)

“…sometimes,” he admitted. “But we agreed, we’ll go there someday. And besides, home is…home is people, as much as any place. And you’re part of my home.”

Telri smiled softly at him, across the fire, reached over to take his hand, and kissed it.

He smiled back, and returned the gesture, before going back to making dinner.

And the others--most of them--are still out there, and I will go back to them, too.

But for now--for now, he had Telri, and soon they would have a child. That piece of his home, his scattered home, was all he needed at the moment.

Isshiri! Sweet boy. I'm still mad about Mel btw.
