White Opal #19; Vienna Orange #5 [Starfall]

Name: something that’s all mine
Story: Starfall
Colors: White Opal #19 (when I was young I wanted to be); Vienna Orange #5 (Where do I go when every 'no' turns into 'maybe'?)
Supplies and Styles: Graffiti – Lilith Faire Day 7 (Second Stage: All Saints “I’ve crossed the deserts for miles… searching for places to find, A piece of something to call my own.”) + Paint-by-Numbers from [personal profile] shadowsong26 (a string of happy coincidences)
Word Count: 504
Rating: G
Warnings: None, really.
Notes: 1337, Starfall Manor; Leaira Modelen. (Earliest of the current-set pieces yet, so probably more where I should have started...)
Summary: Leaira’s deepest-held wish comes true.

Leaira stepped into the empty library. It was hers now – the thing she’d always wanted more than anything else she could remember. She sat on the nearest of the solid wooden tables and swung her legs idly and surveyed the many and varied volumes of her new kingdom.

She’d come a long way to be here – all the way from Lighthaven, right down on the southern coast, up to Starfall Manor in the middle of the northern mountains. She could have taken a post somewhere nearer to home, but she’d always been fascinated by the legends of Starfall and there was nowhere better to explore them than here. She still remembered the way she’d hardly been able to breathe reading the letter accepting her as assistant librarian. She’d been on trial to start with – there were plenty of odd things about being at Starfall that weren’t expected in any other library or archive – but she’d lasted the course, even the training up on the Paths.

The distance from home was a more mixed blessing, but it gave her the other thing she’d wanted – a place where her name was her own, and not her grandmother’s. She was the only Adeleaira Modelen in Starfall, and she’d succeed or fail as librarian here under her own terms.

Leaira pressed her fingers against the grain of the wood. This table must have seen dozens of custodians of this library come and go, but it was her turn now, and she’d barely even been here two years as assistant. There was no way she could have expected such a rise so soon.

She’d spent the past few months thinking more about losing Irval Peine, the previous Librarian, whose health had abruptly started failing earlier in the year. Then she’d wondered who would come next – whether they would be as kind and as easy to work with as Irval, who’d taught her so much. She’d been determined all along to work up the nerve to ask Tannis if she could also apply for his post, but she hadn’t expected to get it. And whatever weight the Modelen name might still carry here, Tannis would never appoint someone to a role like this if she didn’t think they could do it.

Brief guilt shadowed her moment of glee, remembering Irval. At least he’d got to go home – hopefully he could recover there in peace and quiet. And she’d have to find an assistant. She had the part time help of three or four of the younger researchers, but it wasn’t the same thing. That was going to be strange – the odds were that they might be older than her.

Leaira raised her head. She could do it. She knew it. This was her place, her world, the only role she’d ever played where she felt like herself through to her core. And Tannis thought she could do it, too.

It might not be on a level with becoming Lightkeeper of Lighthaven, but as far as Leaira was concerned, it was better.

Leaira and I would be friends because this is the best feeling in the world, getting a key to Your Library. Awesome job.

I love this! That tinge of bittersweetness in her mind is just *chef's kiss*

I love Leaira and her feelings about finding her place! She's living the dream, isn't she? <3 Also I'm very intrigued by all the lovely Starfall descriptions, you're creating a really amazing world here!
