Kes had had runners--children of the Clan, mostly--watching the northern horizon for the past three weeks, ever since she'd received the letter.

The last in a series of several dozen, exchanged over the last year, since Kes had finally decided to reach out, to try to mend the breach between herself and her older sister.

Taz's response had been faster and far more enthusiastic than she'd expected, more forgiving--but, then again, that had always been Taz's way, hadn't it.

Yesterday, at last, one of the runners had come back, reporting that a ship from the North had been spotted, which might not have been her sister's, but the ships that brought navigators south were usually smaller, and landed in Sanru, or somewhere else along the northern coast of the great continent, with the passenger then making their way further south and west by other means.

Kes didn't sail anymore, except on Clan Head business, but she still knew how to calculate approximately how much longer it would take that ship, from her runner's report, to reach this Island, the core of Hantree's territory. So she'd come down to the beach two hours ago, sat on the sand, and waited.

The Northern ship rounded the last of the bluffs, coming into full view, and Kes got to her feet. The tide had come in, the surf was licking around her ankles. She waited, drawing on all the patience years in administration and politics had taught her to remain still, until the ship was close enough that she could see individuals milling about, on deck and in the rigging.

And she could see one of those individuals make for the railing and launch itself--herself--off, the sea rising to meet her and speed her the rest of the way to shore.

Kes bit back a smile. Some things never changed.

Taz stopped, about two yards away from Kes, the water spinning in little whirlpools under her feet. There was a fair amount of silver running through her hair now; she'd braided it in a pattern that showed that off, rather than trying to minimize it. Warm lines around her eyes and mouth showed she still smiled, often.

"...you look good," Kes said, and meant it. Even if it felt stupid, for those to be the first words she actually said to her sister in too damn long.

But it was true. She looked mature, and settled, and happy. Everything Kes could wish for her.

Taz grinned, crossed that last stretch of water, and threw her arms around her, holding her close. "I missed you, too,"

Awwww. Such a great character portrait of both of them, and I'm glad they get to be sisters again.
