you know that history is full of nations that rise and fall.
you're not a fool, nor are you ignorant or ill-educated. you may not have made the same study of history your sister has, but you know enough. you know the broad strokes.
there were conquering pirate kings out of the islands; heartwood; the false lord your own people overthrew near a thousand years ago; there are cities on the northern coast that bear the names of a long-forgotten empire.
you held this in your mind, as you watched a coalition of enemy nations rise up against yours; as you and your father and your siblings (the ones who aren't useless or traitors or both, at least) forged your own alliances abroad.
you forced yourself to remember that nations rise and fall. to accept that at least one of the great powers of the world was about to break.
your error, perhaps, was the same one that countless men or women in your position have made.
your error was in thinking that your nation was still rising. that your nation would not--could not--be the one to break.
until dawn breaks at the end of your world, and you say goodbye to your wife for the last time and walk into what you know is a losing battle with your head held high, despite the despair smothering your heart.
