"Thank you. For staying with me. I know how many reasons I have given you not to."
"Will you at least let me hide you somewhere safe, in the meantime?"
Lux's words echoed around and around in Mariko's head; she could feel her heartbeat, pulsing along the edge of the throat.
She could still feel Lux's blood, sticky and warm and so dark against the angel's inhuman pallor, burning against her skin.
Still feel taste kiss, that gratitude; that brief touch she'd given Lux, even as she'd asked for time.
She'd needed time, to think, to--
God.
(Wrong one, a tiny, pedantic part of her pointed out. She ignored it.)
Lux had brought her here--wherever here was; Mariko hadn't asked, but she...despite everything, after everything, she trusted that it was safe.
And then Lux had tactfully withdrawn. Mariko wasn't sure where she was now, and that...
I asked for this. For space.
After everything, despite everything, she'd needed it.
But this morning, for the third morning in a row, she'd woken up alone, with that image of Lux, bleeding for her, burned into her as deep as all the other scars her angel had left.
...her angel.
Her angel.
Despite everything.
After everything.
It still mattered. All of it still mattered. The good and the bad and the...sublime.
But at the end of the day, Lux was her angel.
And she loved her.
She closed her eyes, leaned against the window; pressing her forehead against it.
"Come back," she whispered. "Come back to me."
She wished--or maybe prayed--with all her heart that, somewhere out in the cosmos, Lux was listening.
