Smokey went to Mexico first, because it was right there. He spoke Spanish okay, for a gringo, and people were very kind to him as he wandered around the country. He went hiking in the Sierra Madres, felt the soft cool wind on his face. In the great and intensely silent Sonoran desert the only sound was the crunching of rocks beneath his boots. The Pyramid of the Sun made him feel small and very young; the Yucatan cenotes held the deepest blue-green water he had ever seen.

When he came home, he knew he never wanted to stop travelling.

--

At nineteen, he saved his pennies, hitchhiked to Canada, and spent a couple months just wandering. Mom was furious, but he was an adult, and anyway Canada was worth it.

He spent more time in the cities on that trip. The land was incredible, of course, but he was more interested in people. A boy his age showed him Vancouver, and kissed him over dinner. A girl in Montreal spoke French with him and laughed at his terrible pronunciation. A cabbie's hair was the same bright blue as his mother's.

He looked at other people with new eyes after that.

--

After his father's family found him, when he suddenly had a lot of money, Smokey went further afield. Ireland, the Hennessy family homeland, so green and lush it hurt his heart. Australia, a continent of desert, alive like only deserts could be. Ethiopia, the Great Rift Valley, home to the earliest human remains ever found.

He watched the fragmentary skulls in the national museum and wondered who they were, who their cousins were. If they'd looked at the horizon and wondered what lay beyond it. If they might have been friends with him.

Probably. Humans could only change so much.
