Ruby #2, Lapis Lazuli #14
Name: shadowsong26
Story: Morning
'Verse: Feredar
Colors: Ruby #2. hair black as ebony, Lapis Lazuli #14. placid
Supplies and Materials: graffiti (Lilith Faire Day 4b: main stage), photography, frame
Word Count: 302
Rating: PG
Characters: Kes
Warnings: Don't think so for this one, no.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
The light of dawn filters through the curtain, spreading across Kes’s face and, even if she comes awake quick in response, she takes a minute to lie there with her eyes closed, breathing in that sunlight and the scent of peace and flowers on the wind before she actually gets up.
Her morning routine isn’t as rushed as it was when she was still spending most of her time on active sailing, but she still puts herself together pretty quick. She’s always been like that, efficient, ready to get moving once she’s up and about. And some of that’s maybe ‘cause she’s had something to prove in the past--to herself and the people around her--but some of that’s just the way she is. Taz was always the impulsive one, sure, but that never meant Kes liked to sit idle. She just liked to be sure before she committed to things.
So, wash, dress, make sure her hair is braded back in something sensible but pretty (or that’s how Lif puts it), jewelry of course, a knife for emergencies, and then another minute to pause and study her reflection, make sure nothing’s out of place.
Nothing is, or if there is anything, it’s quickly set to rights, which gives her the rest of the moment to just bask in what she sees and all it means. In just how far she’s come. ‘Cause here she is, Unthreaded girl from a low-status line that, ‘til her and Taz, hadn’t produced a Captain in generations--and now she’s Head of one of the Islands’ most powerful Clans.
She trades out her earrings for another, brighter coral pair that stands out better against her hair, then, satisfied, heads to her desk in the next room, ready for whatever the day might throw her way.
