Ivy was two years old the first time her mother took her to the Museum.
She didn't remember most of the visit. What she did remember, crystal-clear, was looking up at a massive skeleton with a fiercely toothed grin, reaching a chubby baby hand toward its nose.
It was too high for her to actually touch, of course, even if her mother would have let her. But in her memory she was always reaching up, a breath away from touching something so immense and old that she could barely comprehend it even now.
In that moment, she became a scientist.
