Notes: Pride #2.
"Ooh," Ivy said, kicking her feet up onto the wrought-iron chair across from her. Across the street, a tall redheaded woman adjusted her hat in a shop window. "She's hot."
Across the umbrella-shaded table, Lars adjusted his grip on his paper cup of coffee, squinted at the woman in question, then said, "Yeah, but she looks mean."
Ivy raised her eyebrows at him. She hadn't known Lars for very long, but some things were obvious. "Shouldn't that make her hotter to you?"
"I don't get you guys," Aaron cut in, before Lars could reply. Probably for the best. "Isn't this, you know, creepy?"
Ivy sat up in her chair and twisted around to face her brother, seated behind her, playing on his Game Boy. He hadn't even looked up. "No," she said. "Creepy would be cat-calling. We're just... appreciating. Also, why are you here?"
He shrugged, still without looking away from his game. "Wondered why my best friend and my little sister were meeting up for coffee every other Saturday. Didn't realize it was for--" he waved at them both-- "this. Which reminds me." Aaron looked up finally, but at Lars. "Isn't this something you traditionally do with other men?"
"Sure," Lars said, "but you don't get it, Jay thinks it's disrespectful to his girlfriend, and Russell would be disrespectful to everyone."
Aaron rolled his eyes, and looked back down at the Game Boy. "There's nothing inherently sexual about looking at women on the street."
"Says the man staring at his phone," Lars said. He set his coffee down on the table.
"Also," Ivy said, as the breeze picked up and ruffled the wispy bits of her hair. "technically it's called chick-watching."
Her brother snorted. "What were you saying about disrespectful, Lars?"
She ignored that as obviously silly and reached for her own coffee. "Besides, I had to make sure he was okay to be around Summer, you know?"
"I've... I've already known her for a year and a half," Lars said, sounding a little lost.
"So?" Ivy asked. "Maybe you get possessed by a demon. I have to keep checking. If I have to look at pretty girls to do it, it's a sacrifice I'm prepared to make." She sipped, decided the coffee wasn't cool enough yet, and put it back down on the table.
"Sure," Aaron said, dry as the Sahara. "Sacrifice."
"Oh damn," Lars said in a totally different tone, and Ivy whipped back around so fast one of her braids hit her in the face. "Check her out-- no, by the subway."
Tall, blonde, curvaceous-- the woman, in a tight pink dress and high pink heels, caught Ivy looking at her and winked. "Oh damn," Ivy said, and fanned herself. The woman laughed and winked again before she went down into the station.
"Lucky bitch," Lars said, without heat.
"Okay, you're right," Aaron said. "I really don't get it."

Made me laugh as a summing up.
