Ecru #16 [Divide & Rule]
Name: Gardeners Question Time
Story: Divide & Rule/Heroes of the Revolution
Colors: Ecru #16 (omit)
Supplies and Styles: Eraser
Word Count: 322
Rating: G
Warnings: None.
Notes: Magic AU, 1962. A while ago, I was thinking about where this AU could go that would be different to the original and wrote this in the process. I’m not sure this is where it’s going now, though, so… maybe this will happen, maybe it won’t, but I found it again and thought I should post it anyway!
Summary: A change of scene makes everything better.
***
Julia brushed earth from her overall and removed her gardening gloves. She stood and halted there, watching a distinctively tall and narrow figure walking along the lane towards her. She lapsed into an instinctive smile as Edward approached, his latest student beside him, already almost as tall as him, and broader, but it was Edward’s thin frame that held her attention. He was laughing as he opened the gate, happy here in a way he hadn’t been for a long while. Julia shook her head. He worried too much, that was the trouble.
Now, here, he had a new role to play in stopping Hallam’s work, and had found it more to his liking than either of them had expected. He’d inherited at least something of his father and grandfather’s nose for business and thrived in his managerial role, and enjoyed the tutoring of magical pupils outside of that. He’d grown up half in London, half in Kent, and he liked being back in the country, even if the south west was new to him.
Julia folded her arms in against herself, because while all of that was true, she also knew that Edward was happy because he thought she was better again. In many ways that was true, but all of Mr Harding’s efforts had not been enough to reignite her powers, only the surface illusion of them. She would have to tell Edward in time, but she waited. She had no wish to steal his happiness. She took pleasure in seeing it, and she knew by now how to be careful in keeping her secrets.
“Julia,” said Edward, crossing the lawn from the front door where he’d left Michael. He stretched out a hand, and then leant over to kiss her cheek. When she only squeezed his fingers in response, he drew back, frowning. “Is something wrong?”
She raised her head and smiled again. “Of course not, darling. Everything’s fine.”
