This whole thing is so stupid.

Lauren flicks restlessly through a rack of multicolored dresses, ignoring the saleswoman who watches her suspiciously. Okay, so she's in a fancy boutique in beat-up sneakers and jeans, that's no reason to assume she's here to steal. Maybe the oversized boyfriend hoodie...

The hoodie, which belongs to Lewis. Who is not her boyfriend. Or her lover, or her friend with benefits, because they don't like each other and they certainly don't love each other. They're having sex, and sometimes they go dancing, or out to dinner, and he makes her laugh but he's twenty years older and not interested in anything permanent anyway--

She glances up at the window and the pouring rain outside. She could buy herself a nice dress. They're going dancing tomorrow night. There's a forest green dress with no back and a slit to her hip; that would knock his socks off. She fingers the fabric and likes the way it feels on her skin. It's a little formal, maybe, but she's not sure if she cares, not if she gets to see his face when he sees her, hungry and admiring and maybe, just a little bit, fond?

No, of course not. She drops the dress. He doesn't like her. He certainly doesn't love her.

Fuck this.

She shoves her way out of the boutique and into the rain. Can't believe she thought a little retail therapy would help.

Ow. The emotion in this is strong and raw.
