Michael's not sure that he's ever had a start.

Ends, obviously, plenty of those. His parents' marriage finished before he was born, and his whole life has been witness to its slow death. The end of his sister's hope, the way her life became a grim slog. The end of his own desires, beyond the need to get out. Beginnings, sure. His birth, a mumbled word, and all his first days of school, but those are all just firsts.

This morning in Chicago, walking through a park, this feels like a start.

He thinks it might be his favorite part.
