"I don't know, Cess," Gail said, and sighed, the burst of air a crackle over the line. "I like him, but..."

Cecily kept back a snort through sheer willpower. She did roll her eyes, holding the phone away from her ear just in case-- Gail could hear derision. Must be a teacher thing. "But what? You like him, he's nice, go on a second date. It's not rocket science."

"Third date," Gail said. "Technically. I'm not sure I count coffee as a real date though."

"It can be whatever date you want," Cecily said. She drummed her fingers on her thigh absently, watched a bird outside her living room window duck down into the wisteria. "This is Nathan, right? The one Kim set you up with?"

"Yes," Gail said. "And we did talk about it. The kid thing, I mean. He agrees with me."

Cecily was pretty sure any dude would agree with about anything to get a chance at Gail, but she wasn't going to say that. "Then what's the problem?"

Her sister was quiet for a solid thirty seconds before she said, slowly, "I don't... know. Maybe I'm just second-guessing everything. Because of Brad."

This time Cecily couldn't hold back the snort. "That piece of shit no longer gets any say in your life, Gail. Please tell me you know that."

"I do know that," Gail said, exasperation creeping into her voice. "It's not about him exactly. I made such awful choices with him, how do I know it's not going to happen again?"

"You didn't make shitty choices," Cecily said. "You wanted to get laid and he was good in the sack. Ivy was a bonus, not the goal." Which was actually a good point. She straightened up in her chair a little, resettling her shoulders against the padded back. "What's your goal here?"

"I want to get married," Gail said, surprisingly quick, surprisingly certain. "I want to have a husband and another baby. I just don't know if I want this husband. I mean, he's probably divorced for a reason."

"Yeah, like because he's your soulmate," Cecily said.

"Cess! He is not!"

She raised an eyebrow and tried to keep her glee out of her voice. "He is, and you want to know how I know? You can't think of a single complaint about him. Except 'he's probably divorced for a reason,' and you know that's weak."

Gail sputtered. Cecily persisted. "Seriously. Name me one thing you don't like about him. Just one."

This time, the silence lasted at least a minute before Gail said, "That's not the point at all!"

"Sure it isn't," Cecily said, and began mentally planning the wedding.
