Library Yellow #18, Ruby #6
Name: shadowsong26
Story: Famine and War
'Verse: Lux
Colors: Library Yellow #18. nyctophilia, Ruby #6. vanity
Supplies and Materials: graffiti (Lillith Faire Day 2: Main Stage), photograpy, yarn
Word Count: 313
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Shane, Dimana
Warnings: Nothing specific for this one, I don't think.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always. This...did not quite turn out the way I expected it to? But it's definitely interesting! I should do more with these two...
Before all of this, Shane and Dimana had lived very different lives.
Shane had been alone, childless, with a failed marriage behind her, having outlived most of her friends, living vicariously through the reports Rubika and the other messengers brought her.
Dimana had been a gambler and a con artist, charming and lying and fighting her way from place to place, chasing money and victory wherever they would lead her, making and losing friends as easily as breathing.
Before all of this, it might have been surprising that the two of them were such good friends.
And, sure, they probably would never have met, or spoken, if Rubika hadn't brought them all together.
And, sure, some of it was what linked the two of them and Rubika and Imi, by virtue of what they were--something bone-deep and beyond any mere connection.
But at the same time...
There's something else that binds the two of them, and just the two of them.
Because Shane fought, through her divorce and her grief and things constantly turning out less than she'd hoped, for every scrap of joy and understanding she could find.
Because Dimana wanted, and built her life on making other people want, just a little more than she--or they--should really have.
Because when people are starving, they fight for everything they have.
Because people don't fight unless there's something they want, something that makes it worth the pain.
They don't talk much. They don't need to. Some things don't need to be put into words. Some things are just known.
In another world, they might never have met, or become friends. But here and now, they understand each other, what they do, what they are, who they are, in a way that maybe even Imi and Rubika can't quite grasp.
Here and now, Shane and Dimana--Famine and War--sit together, and understand, and smile.
