The upshot of losing everything was that Prudence could say, at last, that she was over Violet Holmes.
She hadn’t just been with Holmes, Gordon & Gibbs. The firm had become her identity. And now she’d sold out Gordon, even with the quiet support from Gibbs, and been fired by Holmes, she had to discover who she would be next; discover who Prudence Gao really was, or could be, without all those fights, those suits, those inter-office relationships that had propped her up like an exoskeleton.
You weren’t supposed to get over Violet Holmes. She was supposed to shine on in your memory as the one that got away, the one that was almost yours, the one who would have fixed all your problems and taken care of you for the rest of your life. Or then—or eventually—the bitch who stomped on your heart and ruined you for everyone else. Either a hero or a villain, but always bigger than life.
Pru no longer cared how great Violet looked, how impressive she was in the court room, or how skillfully she could make you come, propped up on the office printer or her desk or splayed over the bed in some anonymous hotel room. How hard-won her approval could be. No, Violet Holmes was a vampire, and she could go fuck herself.
Pru felt the first of a heavy load tumble off her shoulders as she made her coffee in the morning and didn’t think about the way Violet liked it, with a swirl of no-fat cream and a sprinkling of sweetener. Later in the bathroom she blacked her nails, noticing the guilt over doing so was no longer there. Violet hated black nail polish.
It was only the first of many loads, but it was a start.
