Ecru #11 [Divide and Rule]
Name: English Rain: An Edward Iveson/Julia Graves Fanmix
Story: Divide & Rule/Heroes of the Revolution
Colors: Ecru #11 (inspire)
Supplies and Styles: Pastels (also for
allbingo February Flowers square "Carnation (Pink) - I'll Never Forget You") + Mixed Media
Word Count: 12 songs + 2 x graphics (500x500 pixels) + Graffiti (
bookblather said post something! This was the best I could do right now).
Rating: PG
Warnings: Some references to canon sad events in the notes. Otherwise, nothing aside from my terrible random song selections.
Notes: A fanmix made up of songs that have in some way inspired me while writing Edward and Julia pieces. Some of these were contemporary songs to help with period atmosphere, others general moods/themes/lyrics and titles I've used over the years.
Summary: I left you out in the English rain, To soak you through and dilute the blame

Playlist on YouTube: English Rain

1. Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling
Flowing into the night?
People so busy, make me feel dizzy
Taxi light shines so bright
2. It Was Written in the Stars - Ella Fitzgerald
It was written high above
That I have to have your love
Or I'll never be free
And cloudy though the day be
Crazy though I may be
What the stars foretold shall be
3. Like I Do - Maureen Evans
She may kiss you like I do
She may hold you like I do
But she'll never
No never, never
She will never, never love you like I do
4. Rumors Are Flying - Frankie Carle & his Orchestra
When I go walking
I hear people talking
They say our affair is not just a passing phase
... Rumors are flying
And I'm not denying
... All the rumours are true
5. Solitaire - Andy Williams
And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without her love it always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
Interlude: Am I Blue? - Ben Selvin & His Orchestra
Am I blue, am I blue
Ain't these tears in my eyes telling you
6. Different Sky - All About Eve
We keep falling in love with no reason, no rhyme
We keep falling in love till our tired heart cries
I don't know you and you don't know me
The time has come to find a different sky.
7. Lonely House - Randy Stonehill
Here we are in the lonely house
And it's sad but true
I can't say these things to you
8. Rainfall - Echoes & Nightcall
We whispered promises
In the chill of dawn
We traded secrets
As our shadows watched
You erased my Transparent
Transparent sins
You made me feel alive
Alive again
9. I Have Made Mistakes - The Oh Hellos
and the sun, it does not cause us to grow
it is the rain that will strengthen your soul
and it will make you whole
and oh my heart, how can I face you now?
when we both know how badly I have let you down
and I am afraid of all that I've built
fading away
10. November - Gabrielle Aplin
You made me high then you swooped so low
From a hummingbird to a silent crow
I was on your side but then I saw it change
I always used to love November
But now it always floods with rain
Bonus Track: I Don't Want To See Caroline - Kirsty McColl
I didn't know what to do, I never called her back...
No, I don't want to see Caroline
I can never face Caroline
COVER NOTES:
1. Used for mood-setting writing Paper Games, a 1970s office AU set south of the river, and also because, while it varies, London was always a big part of canon proper.
2. I found this when putting together a mood-list for a 1948-set AU (requested by
winebabe over on RaTs) where Julia was the politician and Edward just the husband, and the titles of both pieces were taken from it - My Tomorrows in Your Hands & By My Side
3. This song gets a mention in the 1961-2 set Snowed In AU the only game in town, but it's also just very Julia at her most possessive in the way that Edward does not get at all, but doesn't mind.
4. From another late 1940s AU (i.e. canon divergence) where the history is not alternate, and was used for the last two pieces in the sequence, Not Just a Passing Phase and All the Rumours Are True.
5. I was also using this for Paper Games, but it got attached to the only game in town instead and is generally very Edward-without-Julia. Although it is also a joke, because the only game in town is, in this fic, also Monopoly.
[Interlude] - I never used this one, but it was saved as mood-setting for a never-finished AU from a 1920s Egyptian Mummy prompt someone on RaTs gave me.
6. Title and theme for Different Skies (essentially 7 AUs where Edward and Julia fail to get together and one where they do).
7. This is partly Edward with Caroline, but it's also the fate that Edward and Julia skirt around at several points, especially in the first few months of their not-really-a-convenient marriage in canon proper.
8. This was given to me as a RaTs prompt, which I never used in a piece, but it was very much a canon proper Edward/Julia song, with emphasis on the spy aspect, so it stayed on my lists.
9. This slipped into being my latest Edward/Julia song for the current Austerity Britain AU I'm typing up, because it's very them in several ways.
10. The song I most come back to for them for some reason, although also the lyrics do kind of tie in what happens to them in canon-proper.
[Bonus Track]: The lyrics may not match, really, but Edward and Julia are both entirely in sympathy with the sentiment of the title, soI had to use it as a title for a piece and include it here, just because. XD
