They shouldn’t have done this; they shouldn’t be here. It was not right, it was not sensible. Yet despite Julia’s fears earlier, despite his own concerns now, Edward caught hold of Julia’s hand as they walked down the overgrown path to the cottage. He ought to say something. He ought to apologise again, but she tightened her fingers around his and he knew that any such attempt would be a lie. Underneath all his worry, he was unrepentant. He couldn’t be otherwise, with Julia here beside him.

“What have we done?” she said, as she stood back to let him unlock the door and usher her inside. “And what next?”

Edward followed her in, bending his head down to get through the low, old door. “I don’t know.” He took a breath, knowing he had to give her a more practical answer. “Don’t worry. This is, as we agreed, only a convenient arrangement. I just thought that, given your need for lessons, being out here away from everybody else would be best.”

“That,” said Julia, after a brief pause, “is very unromantic.”

“Isn’t that the point?”

She leant back against the door, closing it more fully with her weight and looked away from him. “Edward,” she said, and then stepped forward, and raised her face, catching hold of his arms before she stretched up to kiss him. “Can’t we pretend that’s not true? Can’t we just –?” She tightened her grip on the sleeve of his jacket and seemed to fail in her search for words. “Pretend we’re like any normal couple, here on our honeymoon? Let the lessons wait.”

Edward knew he should argue, but he had no will to try. He pulled her in nearer, bending down to kiss her in return.

“Is that a yes?” she said, pulling away to look up at him. Mocking lights danced in her eyes, as she added, “Darling.”

Edward nodded, putting his hand to her face, stroking his thumb against her cheek. He could feel all her untrained power, a fire under the skin while gold and silver dust seemed to float in the air between them.

“We can pretend, yes,” he agreed, and he could hear his heart beating loud in his chest, as if only now brought back from silence or death by her touch, giving the lie to his words. “Of course.”

He kissed her again.

Okay, this is absurdly adorable. "Pretend" to be in love indeed.

Why do I get the feeling it's not pretending?
