There was yelling into the night. Taerin rightly suspected she wasn't the only one to go without any sleep.
Aunt Alina came to her bedroom near to midnight. Surprised, Taerin saw she was still in her traveling attire, goggles in hand. That meant she'd flown in and come straight from the Keep to argue with Father.
Alina sank onto the bed beside her niece and hugged Taerin close. "I'm going to be second witness for the family." I'm not going to make you do this alone.
Taerin was grateful. Lora hadn't spoken to her since the decision was made. She'd been starting to wonder. "Father said it would be witnesses only. I'm glad for that, at least."
"You deserve a celebration, like everyone else." Taerin could tell Alina wanted to say much more than that, but she held back.
"A celebration needs a happy couple to mean anything."
Alina bobbed her head in concession, then gave her a questioning look. "There wasn't anyone you were holding out for, was there?"
"No." Alina raised a brow.
Taerin tried to be blasé about it. "I didn't think it would matter so soon." Taerin had had her fair share of crushes and encounters for a girl of eighteen, but given her focus on her training, she could admit none had been anything like the girlfriend her fiancé was being forced to leave. She was torn between being grateful she didn't have to go through it, and jealous she didn't have anyone so close. "Besides, how could I be sad about marrying a man said to be in the same caliber as Aldric himself?"
Her aunt nudged her shoulder. "You say that as if you weren't named his goddess Makenna in your own right."
"There is no higher honor." Taerin parroted her father's words. She lifted the blankets so her aunt could join her.
Alina pulled her close and held tight.

i've world built so much for this story without actually writing any proper pieces for it. i'm trying to put things in only where they're relevant to avoid the big bad infodump, but it's really hard sometimes.
