It’s invaluable to be respected by those you serve and support. But you’re swerving off track if you’re performing for praise, high traffic on your social media, or a golden seal of approval from someone you admire. The best kind of reward is the appreciation you earn for giving your most sincere effort and raising the bar of excellence. At the end of the day, the person who must be most pleased with your work is you.")
Word Count: 210
Rating: PG
Characters: Kes
Warnings: Oblique references to some internal Islands prejudice and a major falling-out with a sister/close friend.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
Kes had spent a lot of her life waiting.
Not that she never made strides--she wouldn't be who she was, Head of her Clan despite being Unthreaded, if she never made a move. But her professional life was one thing, and her personal life was another. How many lovers had she walked away from, when maybe they could've been happy together? How long had it taken her to reach out to Taz and patch things up, after their fight at the end of the War?
In hindsight--in hindsight, yeah, she'd had her reasons, always. Some of them had even been good ones, at least at the time. Didn't mean she didn't regret it. Didn't mean she didn't wish she'd moved faster, held herself back just a little bit less often.
Of course, what was done was done, and she couldn't change the past. But she could do better, from here on out.
Yeah. Yeah, Kes had a life to live, one worth living. It was time for her to take a step. See where she could go. Chase the horizon, just like she and Taz done when they were young.
For better or for worse, whether she should've figured it out years ago or not--Kes Hantree was done with waiting.

Yeah, and there are definitely times when Kes considers it to be one. But she overall leads a pretty happy/fulfilled life!
