Gail was more than ready to give birth already. At least, half of her was. The other half was terrified.

She'd chosen this, she reminded herself, she'd chosen to keep her baby when she knew very well she'd get no help from the father. Her baby, floating inside her, safe and warm, who she already loved with a fierceness that scared her. Her baby, who did backflips and kicked her in the ribs. Her baby, more precious than anything else on earth. What was she going to think, when she got here?

The baby would love this world, she decided, and the world would love her. She'd make sure of it.

Gosh, good luck, Gail! It isn't going to be easy, especially in the beginning. It's hard enough with two.

It wasn't easy at all, but she did get Nathan when Ivy was about three and they got married when Ivy was five, so she acquired a co-parent along the way. But the first few years were very stressful.
