Sometimes, Keta felt like all she really knew how to do was lose things. From the time she was eight, she had lost five siblings, including her favorite brother; both parents; her husband, her son...

And yet, for all of that, for all she'd lost, for all she'd grieved--maybe that was why she was coping better than Tana. Tana, who had spent their entire flight from their home into the mountains alternating between hysterics and staring, stone-faced, at the road behind them.

Tana had lost--most of the same people, but it hadn't seemed to hit her this hard before.

But the city falling, and Kellom dying...

Keta reached over and touched her little sister's hand. Tana jumped and glared at her.

"We're almost there," she said, softly. "Then we can rest."

And maybe heal. If you can.

Tana scoffed, and returned to staring down the road.

Keta sighed, and turned her own attention forward again. We still have each other, she thought. I'm still here, and I'll look after you.

She was something of an expert in these things, after all. Even if she and Tana had never been particularly close, at least they had each other. And maybe Keta's experience would help. Maybe she could teach her youngest sister how to cope.

Maybe that would be enough.

Poor Keta, I'm guessing it will not remotely be enough.

I am impressed that she still has hope to teach. I would be looking at my sister and wondering when I will lose her too, or if I will be the one she loses. :( Will they be okay?
