Dinners with family are the worst.

Mom is bragging about the latest bill Reagan's introduced to the New York Senate, about gun rights or whatever, Madison doesn't care. Dad is talking nonstop about Kennedy's latest tennis trophy. Mom and Dad's friends look bored out of their skulls.

And why shouldn't they be? Madison wonders, stabbing a piece of lettuce with her fork. She'd wanted a steak, but Dad frowned and Mom asked if she was really sure about eating that and she got the message.

"Madison, honey," Mom says, "smile. You don't look like you're having any fun."

She smiles.

Oh, that's killing, that need to pretend, and the boredom of feeling disconnected from everyone around you, and still needing to put a smile on.

But messed up people are great to read about! She may be a villain but a lot of my fav protagonists also have interesting baggage.
