The wind picked up bright and bonny, the sails belled out, and Portsmouth receded in the distance. Gail leaned on the rail and watched the sea roll by with a light heart.

It wasn't her first departure. As a child she had gone back and forth to Calais with her father, and of course her ill-fated first marriage had taken her to Portugal and back. But it was the first one where her mind had been so easy, so free of regrets. She closed her eyes, felt the wind pluck at her hair.

When she opened her eyes again, Nathan was leaning on the rail next to her. "Penny for your thoughts?"

She smiled at her new husband and stepped a bit closer. The view was gorgeous but the wind was a bit chilly. "None, really. Just thinking how happy I am."

"No regrets?" He put his arm around her shoulders and she sank happily into the embrace.

"None at all," she said, firmly. She wasn't lying; she was sorry for her family's unhappiness, but she'd made her own without blinking. "I think I'll take to piracy very well, actually."

Nathan muttered, "Privateering," then said, "You'll be the most terrifying one in the crew. Won't even need to roll out the cannon, we'll just put you in the bow and they'll surrender."

Gail laughed. "Will I have a candlestick?"

"No," he said, "they'd die of fright and so would we."

She laughed again. "Well, we can't have that."

They stood in silence for a while, watching the gulls wheel behind them, shrieking as they sailed out of range. No more England, she thought, no more strict rules of behavior, no more having her life dictated by others. She'd still have to consider her husband, her children (for Aaron was as much her son as Ivy her daughter, no), but that was far less than the weight of a family's honor.

Nathan kissed the top of her head, then drew her closer to him.

No regrets, Gail thought, and looked toward her future.
