Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always. Could I please get a tag for Jungle Green?
Like most people of rank, or who at all expected to interact with any foreigners, Riluke had of course learned the near-universal trade language as a child. This meant that, upon her appointment as Grandfather’s ambassador to the Islands, she had no difficulties in communicating--Islander culture being what it was, the vast majority of the people she met, even just wandering in the local market, had grown up essentially bilingual.
But bilingual, of course, meant that they also spoke a local, native language of their own, just as those from the City of Glass did. She could hear it, outside her windows; lacking the hissing sibliants and quick turns and sharp consonants of the desert tongue. It moved slower, for the most part; rolling in circles; lazy, elongated vowels breaking into short, crashing syllables, like waves crashing on the sand, before drifting back again. There was a rhythm to it, one she liked to hear and wished she could understand.
She’d read up on the language, of course, from what texts were available in the Palace library, but memorizing words on a page was worlds away from hearing them actually spoken.
Even if she didn’t, technically, need it, she hoped she’d learn how to speak it one day. She was going to be here for the foreseeable future--probably for the rest of her life--and it would be nice to have that extra piece to make the Islands feel like home.

Yeah, probably. If nothing else, Kes will teach her if she asks, and they're good enough friends in time that she probably will.

Yeah, I had fun coming up with those. I've had a general idea of the desert language for a while, but the Islands one was fun to work out!
