For the first time in a very long time, Fahletya had gone to bed alone, and it was entirely by her own design.
It wasn’t that she didn’t love Jemairin, or treasure the time they’d spent together. But there were rules, and they were there for a reason--of course, whether that was a good reason was up for debate; one she’d had with Ahnrel and Sefalin’s mother more than once, before she’d passed.
But she and Jem had been together for more than four years now, they had a son of their own, and it seemed that her lover was beginning to forget that such things, for priests, were always supposed to be temporary, and secondary to their higher calling.
And it wasn't like Jem was gone from her life. She knew that. They still had a son together, and she’d grown close to his older boys during their liaison. Closer than she had been as merely their parents' friend.
Given all of that, of course they would be friends again, in time. When Jem recovered from how she’d hurt him (because she knew she’d hurt him), and she…in time, they would be friends again.
True, a small, uncomfortable part of her--a part the honesty of the Sun her Pillar forced her to acknowledge--wondered if it was something lacking in her. If, perhaps, Jem loved her more than she loved him. Perhaps, had she loved him more, she would have been willing to challenge those rules, the way Telahnyi had.
But she wasn’t.
Whether that was due to her particular faith, or the quality or quantity of her love, or some other factor she hadn’t thought of, Fahletya knew she couldn’t do it. It was time to move on. It would be, in the long run, better for both of them. She was certain of that, as certain as she could be.
But just because she was certain, just because she knew she’d made the right decision…
Jemairin wasn’t the only one she’d hurt.

ahem
I like how certain she is, and I like how you acknowledge it hurts everybody, even when it is for the best.
