She never meant to love Nolani.

Lonura was born with beauty, intelligence, charm, and self-control, the perfect royal wife if she hadn't also been orphaned. But such was the world, and being a royal favorite wasn't a bad way of life. She had hoped to like Nolani, or whoever chose her-- she didn't think she could stomach someone she didn't even like. But Nolani is so clever and funny, so quietly burdened and so beautifully steady... Lonura didn't see it happening until it was too late.

And now this letter.

Stupid, she thinks, fiercely, and turns her face to stone.

I don't know the story but ouch. I agree, this sounds like a bad situation. She is in a subordinate position, isn't she?

Sort of? She's a lady of the court and Nolani is a princess. They do get back together, it just takes some time.

I would also highly recommend Feredar; it's a marvelous story. As is everything shadowsong does, really.
