Akadine was helping spell off the drums, having just put her friend under the table with a hefty pitcher of mead. The drumskin was taut, vibrating sweat pounded up by her ferocious beat, a space of silence she had been given to fill over the dance square. She was by no means an expert, but when it came to causing chaos, she liked to go with the flow, and she was gratified when the more proficient musicians backfilled for her, and she was able to find the middleground of a steady beat.

It was the night of the equinox and all of the magicians and reliquarists had filtered down into town to share in tricks and fun and to give blessings to the travelers who came up Urdasvale to celebrate celestial events. As always, the magic bouquets and jars of lights had delighted her daughters in the afternoon. Once the night had fallen and they'd taken a brief respite to put their girls to bed, the evening of star-watching, dancing, drinking and showing off had begun, and Akadine had gotten into the wise of the holiday with a passion. She'd already won three arm-wrestling matches and was considering what she could do to start a proper wrassle with some of the burlier looking magicians who she was certain were too cerebral to have much of an edge on her... but now she caught sight of Brandili on the dance square and thoughts of showing off left her head.

The woman had never grown her hair out to the lengths it had been when they met, but she only razed it back to bare scalp two or three times a year, and right now the burning lights surrounding the square had caught in the frizz in the most satisfying way, a halo of gold and glimmers of light beading sweat on her temple. Akadine grinned widely and put another flourish on, encouraging her wife to greater efforts. Brandili had been eking out a space to dance with her hunting buddy, but when she happened to turn and their eyes locked, Akadine felt a frisson racing over her bare arms and neck, despite an inner warmth.

Brandili mouthed something, her expression making the meaning of the flirt clear, and Akadine inclined her head to cast back an icy, distracted smile. Wrestling of a different sort tonight, then. She felt the mead suffusing her, warming and tingling as the sound of fiddles and flutes came together to support her, woven in a net of pleased delight. Closing her eyes, she leaned her head further back and cast her eyes skyward, noting the stars had already well come out to watch them play. The moon would be up later, rising large and welcome as she made the transition from spring to summer.

Something blotted the light, high above, and Akadine slitted her eyes to follow the black-on-black shape until it disappeared over the line of the mountains. There was something up there, and she knew her eyes weren't tricking her... but despite the call to investigate she suddenly felt tugging all the way to her core, she pulled back hard and gripped the edge of the drum. Thankfully, the rest of the band made up for her sudden silence, and after a few moments of what felt like a thunderous heartbeat, Akadine slipped away from the stage.

"Hey," Brandili had found her, leaning against a pillar in the cold away from the lights. "You finally had enough to drink?"

Akadine clasped the hand that had lighted on her shoulder, glad to twine fingers and feel the rings that Brandili wore. She turned, leaning into her, and placed her cheek against the other woman's, even enjoying the interference of the hoop earring studded with little rubies that Brandili had put on for the occasion. The way she dripped with elegant beauty was an anchor to the frenzy that had slipped in around the edges of her drunk. "Get me soused on a pitcher and you'll know someone's taken over my body," Akadine retorted, but quietly. "Just had my fill of banging away on something for now."

"I call a lie to that." Brandili nuzzled her close, drew her into a kiss. "Come dance with Dorada and me."

"Hmm, s'that a euphamology?"

"A euphemism?"

Akadine pulled her head back and then, laughing, rested it briefly on Brandili's shoulder. "Yeah, whatever. I'll come dance, if you have a drink with me after."

"I think that can be arranged." They pulled back, loosely at elbow's reach from one another. Still, Brandili caught something in the way Akadine's gaze wandered. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"Just... distracted. It's nothing." Another kiss helped to focus her, and putting her feet to the dance floor kept her head down. She knew they weren't alone in Urdasvale, but how to break the news that a dragon had come to scout this neck of the woods was something she couldn't possibly explain, let alone advise upon. She'd been playing for too long a human to give up the jig now and, stubbornly, maybe, she didn't want to ruin a perfectly good equinox when it was only just beginning.

OHH knowing how this one ends makes this beginning just so ferocious. I really like the bookending kind of effect it has, put alongside Akadine's eventual return -- and now I reaaallly want to read the intensity and angst in between.

Also, I can feel the sultry and celebratory mood of this one in my bones. Your description, especially in the first handful of paragraphs, is absolutely delicious. They really know how to party down, these folks... and now I also want a compendium of all of their yearly holidays and the traditional celebrations that go with them!
