The second time David was taken away was--well, Ruth wasn't sure whether she'd call it better or worse than the first. On the one hand, she knew what had happened.
On the other...well, she knew what had happened.
And then there was the second time he came back.
She was walking up to the house, having just driven her son back to school after his fall break, when she heard someone call her name.
Ruth turned, and there he was, standing uncertainly to one side. He looked drained, and there were shadows behind his eyes that hadn't been there before, but he was still her David.
And he was here.
"David," she breathed, relieved. Because she'd known--after the first time, she'd known he could come back. Would come back. But it was one thing to know it, and another for it to actually happen.
"I..." He hesitated. "I waited a while," he confessed. "The first few weeks are always...always awful and I didn't..." He trailed off. "I'm sorry."
She took two steps, and that was all she needed. She kissed him softly. "I'm glad you're here," she said. "I missed you."
He smiled just a little, and wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. "I love you," he murmured into her hair.
She leaned into his embrace, and whispered, "Welcome home."

I don't recall, what's up with the Ruth AU? Besides adorableness in the midst of horribleness.

The Ruth AU is the one where Simon decided to make contact with Ruth after his memories of her returned. In canon, he decided that going in and out of her life like this would be harder/crueller/selfish of him, so he never does (though their son tracks him down later, hence the Family keeping track of him over the next thousand years).

As far as he knows, yeah--he hasn't really aged since he was in his late thirties/early forties, and so far nothing he's come across has been able to kill him...
