Kesshare and Ineku had an arrangement.

For the most part, they suited one another’s needs quite well. Their politics more or less aligned, their opinions on how to raise the children, how they liked their household organized. Oh, they disagreed on occasion, but were always able to come to a consensus in the end.

The problem was, while there was certainly a mutual attraction, particularly in their youth, they were not entirely sexually compatible. There were things Kesshare wanted and needed that Ineku could not tolerate, and things he needed and wanted that she could not provide.

So, an arrangement.

It was built into their marriage contract, as such things often were. Not always, but Kesshare preferred it that way, and Ineku did not object. Once a month (or more frequently, if discussed beforehand), on a date where they had no other commitments, they would seek sexual release elsewhere.

There were rules, of course. Neither would ever take a formal favorite; but there were plenty of reputable professionals in the City. Kesshare preferred to go to a well-maintained and highly regulated brothel that catered to her particular tastes and select a different partner each time; Ineku tended to cycle through three or four independent courtesans of great beauty and discretion.

It may not have held up for those with a more idealistic view of marriage, but Kesshare and Ineku had always known what their relationship was. Whatever bonds they had between them, they were only strengthened by their arrangement.

I like how ordered and comfortable this is. It might not be the most loving marriage, but it's a comfortable and a strong one.
