Avery came up in August, her white graduation dress retailored for a wedding and her belly a little rounder, a little more protruding than it had been in May. Not startling, but...

"It's a boy," she said, and touched Carlos's chin, tipping his face up. "Stop staring."

"A boy?" he asked, and reached out, then froze, halfway there. Mom had been super cranky with Renata. "Can I touch?"

Avery smiled at him. "You helped make him. Why not?"

He put his hand against her belly, his palm curving. There was a baby in there. Holy shit.

Suddenly everything was real.

I like that their dynamic still has that bit of playfulness to it. They might be able to get through this if it doesn't all turn to angst.

They do, actually! They are still besties many, many years later. Not married anymore, but still besties.
