Story: In the Heart

Summary: Avery has news.

Notes: And the natural consequence of all that sexing...
Avery went home for summer break too, which Carlos understood, even if it was kind of upsetting. It was even more upsetting when she called him in the middle of July and said, with no preamble, "So, I'm pregnant."
Carlos stared at the phone for a moment, and then said, "Really?"
"Really," Avery said, and then laughed. "Get this, I'm pretty sure I got pregnant on April 1st. Hell of a joke."
"Yeah," he said, still confused. She was... but they used condoms, how could she be... okay, not the point. "Okay. Uh. What do you want to do about it?"
Avery went quiet for a moment, then she said, as if choosing her words very carefully, "I'd like to keep it. I mean, I could get an abortion, but... I don't really want to."
Well, that was an easy enough answer. "So don't," Carlos said. "I mean, if you want to, I'm there, I'll help pay for it, just let me know, but I mean, you don't."
"No, I don't," Avery said, and her tone relaxed a little.
He was thinking now, his brain working again. His parents had gotten married in college, even if they hadn't had Luiza until well after. And he really did love Avery. She was so much fun to be around, smart and funny and amazing, and the sex was great, and, well, he was responsible for this too. "Okay, so, do you want to get married?"
"Married?" Avery asked. She didn't sound upset though, just thoughtful. "For the baby?"
"No," Carlos said, and then, "Well, yeah, I mean, partly, but I'd want to marry you anyway. I mean, I do want to marry you regardless."
He could hear the shrug in Avery's voice. "Sure, why not," she said. "You tell your parents, I'll tell mine, and we'll reconnect afterwards? Make plans then?"
"Sounds good," Carlos said, and was surprised to find that it did.
