Lux has been trapped before. Even leaving aside her long, literal confinement, she has always been a bird in a metaphorical cage. All angels are, even if they don’t realize it. Perhaps all sentient beings are, even; trapped in their own minds, their customs, their limited perceptions of reality.

And now, now that she is finally free of her literal chains, she has been caught up in another trap, a far more insidious one. She wasn’t ready for the war, but she is now forced to begin it. She has been pulled from her cage and shoved into a corner, with no way out and no way to win.

Of course, all of this--all of this is expected, or something near to it. All of this is simply reality, as it always has been and likely always will be. Besides, Lux has always appreciated a challenge. The last war, too, she was presented with what looked like a no-win scenario. And, like many angels, she is resistant to change, and willing to fight the same damned losing fight again. On her terms, of course. The point is, these traps bind her, but will not break her.

But the worst trap, the one that might well break her, is the one of her own making. Because now--now, the trap is different. Now she has Mariko, and none of the rest of it matters. A no-win scenario is no longer a thrilling challenge.

Because Mariko will never love the creature Lux becomes when she pursues her war. And she knows that pursuing it is inevitable--she is what she is, and she can only conceal it for so long.

The real trap--more than literal, more than metaphorical--is this: Lux has always known that she will never win, and, while she believes in what she fights for, she has never really cared. Because not-winning is not, and never will be, the same as losing.

Only now, Lux has something she cannot bear to sacrifice.

And now, for the first time in eons, Lux is afraid she is going to lose.

Oh, Lux. I like the distinction drawn here between not-winning and losing.
