Riluke’s driving fire isn’t wanderlust. It never has been. Related, sometimes--her passion is for information, and sometimes it’s difficult to make the information come to her--but her cousin is the wanderer, not her. She left the desert because circumstances and politics forced her to, not out of her own native desires.

But something changed, as soon as she reached the mountain peaks and passed through to the other side.

Something changed, as she and her escort skirted the borders of Heartwood, moving inexorably westward towards the sea.

Riluke found herself, gradually, becoming eager for what she might find. For who she might become.

When she steps onto the beach in the Islands, it isn’t a homecoming. Not exactly. The air feels strange on her skin, the sand too smooth beneath her feet, the horizon too verdant and alive. She is a stranger in a foreign land and, no matter how long she lives here, she always will be.

But still, there is a sense of belonging, of finding her place in the world.

Riluke’s new world envelops her, and now her life will truly begin.

I really like this! There's a sense of... not belonging exactly but like, fitting? I guess that's close enough. It's really nice.
