Summary: Elise has always admired the winged spirits. But she has never hoped to actually be close to one... until one of them chooses her.
---
Elise passes the winged spirits every day as she walks to work.
They are truly beautiful, with eyes that shine in every color of the rainbow. Some of them have feathery wings, bright and wispy and so soft-looking that she longs to touch them. Others have the iridescent wings of dragonflies, or the smooth, fuzzy and leathery wings of bats, or even rainbow-scaled like dragons. They are infinite in their variety, and every one of them is unique and bright.
She would most dearly love to see one of them in flight, but she never will. They are all chained to the ground, their manacles ugly and black against their shining skin. Their lives are a luxury for the rich, bought with an ancient bargain made by the wizards who saved their plane from a cruel invasion. In exchange for their protection they send some of their own spirits, to offer their services to the people of this world... but why should they be chained? Why can't they make their own choices?
She hates to pass them by. But she will never, in her wildest dreams, have the money to save even one of them. She doesn't know what happens to them when they are... purchased? Used? But she knows that once one of them disappears, she never sees them again. She doesn't want to think about it; sometimes she fears that it breaks them, leaves them gasping and in pain on the cold ground, and it's the most horrifying thought she can imagine.
---
One night she sees one of them in her dreams.
The spirit floats above her, smiling gently. Their eyes glow a brilliant gold, and their wings are a brilliant greenish-blue that sparkles in the moonlight. They do not speak, but they hold out their hand, their brown skin lit as if from within.
She wants to take their hand. She wants to pull them away from the black energy that holds them, but... she can never reach far enough, and the spirit always fades away.
---
She sees her spirit the next day in the viewing room.
Elise stops in her tracks as she passes them, hears a man curse behind her as he swerves to avoid her, but she doesn't care. Her eyes are fixed on her spirit, the one from her dreams. She remembers them distinctly, the golden eyes and bright blue wings, and as she stares at them she sees the familiar brown hand that reaches for her.
It's just like the dream. She tries to reach out, touch the glass, but her nerve breaks, and she runs away far enough that she's panting as she draws to a stop. Her fingers are trembling as she struggles for her inhaler, still seeing those bright eyes.
---
She dreams of them again that night.
"Hello," they say without words. She does not know how she hears them, and cannot describe their voice, except that it is kind.
"Hi," she says, suddenly self-conscious. "Who are you?"
"I wish I could tell you my name," they said, "but I'm afraid it would mean little." Their smile widens a bit. "I hope I did not frighten you."
"I'm sorry," she said, staring down at her feet. "I just... you're beautiful, and I'm... I don't know."
"You are beautiful as well, I think. You have a better soul than most of the others who come to see us. They only want luxury, the thrill of an experience."
She blushes. "But... they'll never let me near you!"
"It is not their choice. I was chosen to pay a debt that my people owe to yours. It is ultimately my choice how I wish to pay that debt." Their eyes glowed brightly. "You will wake soon. If you wish to join me, then come to me tonight."
The light overwhelms her, until she cannot help but open her eyes.
Her heart is hammering in her chest as she pulls on her sweatpants and a tee, and runs out of her apartment, breathing heavily all the way.
---
They are waiting for her, just as they'd promised.
There are no more manacles on their legs. Their skin glows with a warm golden light, from head to toe. At first she is disappointed to see them on the other side of the glass, but her disappointment turns to joy as they walk through to join her.
"Is this really all right?" she asked, her voice quavering.
"Of course. They cannot hold me, if this is how I wish to fulfill our pledge."
"That's not what I meant," she said. She feels her eyes water, wonders if it's only the wind. But... no, surely not.
"I understand." They reach for her, and she reaches out, takes their hands. "This is not the end for me," they say. "I promise. Let me share this moment with you."
She finally lets herself smile, then, and lets go of her fear. "Yes," she said. "Yes."
---
She will never be able to describe it.
She can't describe her spirit merging with theirs, her eyes opening to see a beauty in the sky that she has never imagined. They - she and her spirit - fly into a sky that she has never seen before, a sky in another world, and she soars. For a moment she is not a plump, unassuming woman in a dirty city. She is free, and she can feel something like love all around her and inside her, and she is so happy that she cannot contain herself. They are flying through a place that she has never seen, otherworldly and blue and full of brilliant stars – far brighter than she has ever seen before. She travels through the sky as if she were walking on the ground – no, more easily than she has ever run before. She is so, so very free.
She remembers laughing. She remembers being happy, truly happy, for the first time in forever.
She remembers soaring.
