Roneli found the trip down to the City of Glass sort of surreal. At least for the first month or two, once she and Papa left the North and made landfall on a rocky beach in Sanru, she kept getting hit by waves and waves of deja vu. She hadn't expected to remember any of it at all--after all, she'd only been three when they'd come this way before, in the opposite direction, so she could stay with Aunt Taz and Uncle Dallu and learn how to use her magic properly. But the air smelled familiar, and the water they collected tasted familiar, and the birds sounded familiar.

It was weird.

That feeling passed, as they went further south and east, at least. Papa told her stories as they went; she knew she'd been through some of this territory before, but even those faint ghosts of memories had faded, and she started to feel a little more comfortable with the world around her. At least until they reached the mountain peaks, where it was cold and icy and just different enough from where she'd grown up to feel strange again.

And then they plunged down into the desert, into her new home, and it was all so strange. That made it almost easier to deal with, than even the gradual shifts from places half-remembered.

But when they reached the city--

Oh, it took her breath away. The light drifting through the walls and ceilings, surrounding her like auroras, making everything magical.

It was still surreal, and Roneli knew she'd get used to the lights and the rainbows in time, but in those first few moments, standing in her grandmother's audience hall, meeting her in person for the first time, she felt like she'd been transported to a whole other world.

The colors felt like Papa, the air smelled like the spices he liked, and everything just sort of snapped into place inside her head.

And, more importantly, she felt like she'd finally come home.

I love how she connects the City and its smell and everything to her father; it makes her at-home feeling so much more real.
