The more Deshell stared at this gods-damned mess of a barfight that had landed on his desk, the more his head hurt.

On the surface, it was clear-cut enough. Liresh had started the fight. Everyone he’d been able to interview who was sober enough to remember the incident agreed on that. And, even without witnesses, Deshell would probably have bet on that anyway. Liresh was a cranky old bastard even before he started drinking, and was usually locked up at least once a week for picking a fight in one of the dockside taverns.

But once he got past how the fight had started, things got a hell of a lot more complicated. The sailor Liresh had aggravated this time--an eighteen-year-old girl named Taz--had broken his arm.

And two tables.

And a window.

And a half-dozen clay mugs.

Part of him was a little impressed at what she’d managed to pull off. And part of him was fairly sure not all of the damage was hers--the arm, yes, but some of the property could have been other patrons taking advantage of the chaos to indulge in a little destruction of their own without getting caught.

Hell, part of him just wanted to let the girl off with a warning, however much might or might not have been her doing. It was what he normally did in these situations, for a brawl participant who was clearly not at fault. Maybe a fine, if they were a repeat offender, which Taz Hantree was not. Besides, Liresh had more or less gotten what was coming to him, and would maybe shape up stop causing so many fights. On the other hand, she had caused a significant injury, and the property damage alone…

Hence the headache. Hence why she was still cooling her heels in lockup, two days after the incident.

She was behaving herself for the moment, and had even freely admitted her responsibility for the arm, at least. Deshell supposed he should be grateful for small favors. Not that her current behavior solved his problems, but she wasn’t adding to them. Anymore.

He would have to send her back to her ship before it left, of course. The formal and informal agreements between Asendar and the Islands required it, especially since she was a mage. And he had all the evidence he needed now, so he couldn’t really stall his decision anymore. He just didn’t know what the hell would be appropriate, given the circumstances.

Deshell took a deep breath, pinched the bridge of his nose, and looked at his options.

Liresh started it, he reminded himself. But she still broke his arm. I think, for the injury, we fine her what I would a three-time brawl participant. As for the property damage… He sighed, and shook his head. I’ll fine her the cost of repairs to the window and tables, but convince the owner to let the mugs go. And she’ll have to stay in lockup until her ship leaves. It was far from a good solution to his problem, but he was out of time. It would have to do.

He wrote up his report quickly, before he talk circles around the situation again and decide it wouldn’t work, then sent it up the chain of command for approval.

The Emerald Star would be leaving in two days. And then Taz Hantree would no longer be his problem to solve.

If only Liresh would prove so easy.

OH TAZ oh my GOD. Good move, Deshell, but oh my GOD. XD And that's why you don't pick a fight with Taz. You may start it but she will finish it.
