Summary: Sophia leaves home.

July 2009

Sophia put her hair up in a tight bun as she stormed down the stairs. Dani and Ben stood in the living room, worry rippling across their faces. Dani buried hers quick, expression like flat marble. Then she saw Sophia's duffel bag.

"No," and she moved in front of the door almost faster than Sophia could see. Sophia was the strongest of them -- so far, Ben was still just a kid -- but damn if Dani wasn't lightning. "Just think about this--"

"I have thought about this. For years. Come on, D, move out the way."

"Just wait, okay? Wait until you graduate -- Mom, tell her!"

"Girl's made her decision." Sophia kept herself from looking back. Sounded like Mom was halfway down the stairs. "I've made every argument I have."

"This last one was the least convincing." Her cheek still sting. She didn't rub it.

"You're Family, you can't go," Ben said. "You belong here."

"Seriously, Benji? Ugh, go fetch something." He looked away, glaring at the floor. Was that a tear? She'd hadn't -- no. Good. Let him be upset. Let him be glad she was leaving.

She went for the door. Dani walked with her. "Please, just think about this. I know you don't want to be a huntress, skip all that. Think about how you'll survive. You're sixteen, you have no diploma. A woman out there alone, okay, they don't think the way we do--"

"Uh, good! That's kind of the fucking point!" She stopped and faced Dani head on. "I can't believe you, D! If I wait until I'm eighteen and have to tell the Arbiters I don't want to work for the Family they're liable to damn my damn head off! And what if you fall in love with a woman, huh? What if you want to marry her and have a dozen little sperm donation babies?"

"Goddess, don't say it like that--"

"In vitro, whatever. They'll do the same thing to you they did to Aunt Barb!"

Dani put her hands up. "Look -- and it's shitty, I'm not saying it's not shitty, me and Barb bat for the same team -- well, sometimes -- anyway that was because she was Sixth Gen and they wanted her to have bio kids. Still shitty, but different situation, okay?"

Sophia rolled her eyes. "Oh my g-- holy shit, listen to yourself. They have you brainwashed, too!"

"Damnit, I've spent time out in the world, Soph! It's not safe!"

"We might be safer here, but this place is stifling. It's like a vice. I'm afraid everything is going to get squeezed out of me." She shook her head and continued walking. Gravel crunched under her feet, the sound echoing.

"Where are you going?"

"Uh, away? I'm not telling you, you'll tell Mom."

"No, I meant--" She heard keys jingle. "Take the Crescent."

Sophia turned back around. "What? I can't do that, you need it for work."

"What, are you going to hitch all the way to Houston?" Sophia shrugged. "Please, take the car. You have a license, you're on the insurance. I'll transfer ownership to you once you have an address."

Sophia squared her shoulders and returned to Dani. They held hands for a moment. Sophia had ended up so much lighter than the rest of them, no matter how much sun she got. Dani used to tease her, say she was adopted or found on the side of the road.

Tears threatened. Her chest heaved with the effort it took to hold them back.

"At least this way you'll have somewhere to sleep."

"Thanks, Dani."

Sophia stared at their shoes. She was afraid if Dani hugged her, she'd change her mind.

"Hey, little sister." Dani put her hands on Sophia's shoulders. "We're both old enough to have a relationship that has nothing to do with Mom. I won't tell her anything you don't want me to. I just want to know you're safe. That's all I'll tell them, okay? Whether or not you're safe."

"L.A.," Sophia blurted out. "That's where I'm going."

"Los Angeles? Shit, you're way too smart for that town. At least head to New York."

Sophia chuckled, the sound getting stuck in her throat. "I want to be a screenwriter."

Dani pulled her into a huge. "You and everyone else. Don't hold yourself above waitressing, okay? And please, please, don't lose my number. I swear I'll keep your secrets."

Sophia hugged her back. Her fingers brushed against the waxing moon tat on the back of Dani's, identical to the one inside her own wrist. Simple, solid black. "Okay. Don't come after me either, okay? Not for awhile at least. Let me... let me build my own life. Let me figure it out on my own."

Dani sighed around a hiccup. "Okay, sis. Okay."

Sophia got in the car. A sleek black 2008 Helios Crescent, manufactured in Detroit by a Family-run company. It looked like your average car, but the average car didn't have half a dozen hidden compartments or ancient blessings etched into the frame.

She turned the ignition and let the window roll down. "Take care of them, D."

"You know I will." Dani slapped the roof and Sophia backed into the road. She waved, once, then drove. She watched Dani in the rear-view, standing in the middle of the road, until they couldn't see each other anymore.

Oh, Sophia. I think she's doing the best thing for herself here, especially given her parentage (that we know about and the characters don't, ha) but I can see how hard it is for her.

Oh, I hope she hasn't made a mistake. I can understand her wanting to get out, but Dani has a point about her lack of qualifications.
