Drumming Song, Florence and the Machine

Augusto is impossible to forget, or to resist. They all know this, in their own ways-- Virginia, cradling his child a country away; Julia, running from him with every intention of running back; Martina, who stayed when any other woman would have left. They all know it-- they know they'll come running when he smiles.

It's not control, it's not power, it's just him, how much he cares, how much he loves them all, and their children.

They all know it, and in their own ways, it binds them together.

Boudicea, Enya
Kiss You 'Til You Weep, Paul Gross

He's a good man, and she's a strong woman, and that's the only reason this has worked.

Oh, Martina loves him, certainly, and he loves her. That isn't even in question. It's just that she's not the only one he loves, and every time she hears of another, something in her dies a little more.

But she does love him; he does love her. He is a good man, good enough to fulfill all his responsibilities, and she is a strong woman, strong enough to hold this together.

Even when it makes her weep, she can hold this together.

Alaura's Theme, City of Angels
Tidal, Imogen Heap

What Gabriella wants, she gets.

This is simply a fact of life. What she wants, she gets. She wanted Augusto, she got Augusto. It infuriates her that he is not only hers, but that is the price for having him, for keeping him.

She pays it because she must, not because she wants to. What she wants is Augusto, always, only hers. What she wants is those other women and their brats gone.

What she wants, she gets.

She thinks maybe not this time.

Aurora, Mike Oldfield
Possession, Sarah McLachlan

It's a sweet kind of sorrow, knowing she can't have all of him.

Arianna loves that about him, that his heart is so big. She knew from the start that it couldn't all belong to her, and she's come to terms with that.

Besides, when she has him, she has him. His attention, his heart, is all for her; he may perhaps be thinking of his children, but never about his other loves. She loves that about him too.

It's a sorrowful kind of sweet, knowing that at least she has some of him.

Blue Turning Grey, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Sugar, Tori Amos

He courts her so daintily, afterwards, that Flavia can almost believe that this is normal, being the mistress of a married man with two other mistresses-- all right, he calls them girlfriends, but she knows what they are, what she is. He's so gentle with her, so loving, the sweetness she's always wanted.

It feels weak, to give in to this. It feels impossible.

It feels like the only choice she can possibly make.

Tango Amongst the Lilies, Mychael and Jeff Danna
Dance For Me, Pony Up!

Violetta likes to dance for her lovers.

Actually, that's an understatement. She loves to dance for them. Elisa, because she will get up and dance with her, hip to hip and breast to breast until they stop dancing and start fucking. Augusto, because he'll be riveted. She can make him clench his hands so hard he leaves crescent nail marks in his palms, can make him sweat and lick his lips and watch her as if he can't look away. And when she tells him he can touch her at last--

She loves to dance for them.

Happily Ever After, Zbigniew Preisner
L-O-V-E, Nat King Cole

Elisa adores Augusto in part because he gives so much and asks for nothing in return.

Well, that isn't quite true. He asks for love, and understanding; children, and that she raise those children as well as she can. But those aren't chores, aren't even duties, but pleasures. Even if understanding is hard sometimes, it's part of loving him.

Not before Violetta did anyone ever love her like that, without asking anything in return.

She can't imagine how she got so lucky, to have them both.

Dreamscape, Joel Fahlberg
Today Was a Fairytale, Taylor Swift

Her time with Augusto was too short, and almost too wonderful to bear.

Virginia knows it was wrong. He was married, and he was in some ways her superior-- she should not have allowed him anywhere near her. But she did, and he loved her so well that the few short days they spent together are burned into her mind. She wishes it could have been longer, but she is grateful for what she had.

Most of all she is grateful for Gina Sophia, her precious, beautiful daughter.

She wishes he could know her.

Someone To Trust, Bear McCreary
Perfect Day, The Velvet Underground

Julia knew it couldn't last.

Nothing good in her life has ever lasted. So of course, however perfect her days were, however loving the father of her children, she always knew this day was coming.

She can't stay off it, not yet. She can't go cold turkey. She'll get clean for her babies, the only pure and perfect thing she has, but she can't do it yet.

Maybe she'll go back, later, when she's clean. Maybe she'll see if she can be the kind of person good things happen to.

Just not yet.

Arco Arena, Cake
Cold As Ice, Foreigner

Melissa's not like the others.

She's tried very hard to be that way. Stupid saps, playing house, pretending Augusto is theirs for as long as he bothers to stay. Melissa is nothing if not practical, and she knows exactly what this is-- a business transaction, sex for money and presents, a child for an apartment and total security.

It's a relief when he finally catches on. She's so sick of pretending.

If Loving You Is Wrong, LeAnn Rimes

He loved them all, and they all love him, in their own ways. He was so good to them, supportive and loving, always there for them and their children.

At the wake they stand together, accepting consolations, sharing memories. Violetta and Elisa hold each other. Flavia and Arianna stand together, hugging occasionally, supporting each other silently. Martina and Gabriella actually speak courteously to each other.

They all love him, after all.

In an odd sort of way, it makes them family.
