"Alan."

Surprised he looks behind him. Not having noticed her approaching. Though that is not really an exception anymore. But the fact that she seeks him out. That is...

She comes standing next to him, her arms resting on the balustrade of the balcony. Eyes fixed on the sunset before them.

For a couple of seconds he watches her. Before he too focuses on the sunset again.

Neither of them breaks the silence. For a change it is a comfortable one. For a change, it is comfortable being near each other.

There is no need to speak. Both know what is on the other one's mind anyway. Well, sort of... They both want to say the same thing. They just don't know how.

It is the last evening. Tomorrow the battle will begin. The last one. They think. They hope...

"How come we got off on the wrong foot? Why did we dislike each other so much? Why did we fight one other?"

Out of the corner of her eyes she can see him shake his head.

"I don't know. I think we were scared. And we were just... Young?. Too young for this task. Too young for all that was about to happen… I think.”

She nods. Places her hand on his arm. It makes him look aside again. Facing her.

“If it is not too late…”

She takes her hand of his arm, holds it out to him.

“Do you think we can put everything behind us and, for what might perhaps be our last evening, be friends? Or something close to that?”

Surprised Alan looks at her. Just looks at her. He sees her point. He understands her completely. It has been his own arrogance after all, that has driven this wedge between them at the beginning. It has been his fault to begin with. And now she offers him this chance, this one chance, to make it right again. She asks him to do what he should have done ages ago.

He takes her outstretched hand. Feeling relieved and almost forgiven at the touch.

“Hi. I’m Caithlynn, wielder of Air. How do you do?”

Smiling sadly, he shakes her hand.

“Hi. I’m Alan, I wield Fire. I’m glad to have you by my side.”

The last words are so unexpected that Caithlynn’s eyes open wide. Before she too smiles. A little sad. But her eyes are sparking. There is a fire there, burning hot. Determination. Perhaps this new start is just what they need to make it through… Perhaps they can make it through after all. Perhaps, just perhaps, all they have done wrong, will not result in the end of the world… Perhaps. Just perhaps…

I really feel for them, there's so much self awareness here.

This and the last one have just a poignant not of wistfulness to them. You really captured the mood with these two and their situation. I like it a lot!

Aww. I'm glad they could try again, even so soon before their possible death.
