Raven waited until Thanksgiving to do it, because that year was different from most years: she would be spending Thanksgiving with both of her parents, at her dad's place in Brooklyn.

She supposed someone else might call her parents estranged, since they rarely talked unless it was something to do with her, and they never, ever spent holidays together. But Raven knew it wasn't like that. Her parents' relationship had just run its course, as her mom had once explained to her. The breakup had happened not long after Raven was born, had been amiable, and there were no hard feelings on either side. They didn't see each other because each wanted the other to live their own lives with as little baggage as possible.

Raven had no reason to disbelieve her mother. They were always honest with each other.

Which was why, when circumstances contrived to get the both of them near the city over Thanksgiving weekend and she and her mom were invited to dinner at her dad's, she decided it was time to be honest about something she had been thinking about for a long time.

She didn't think it would be a big deal, but she also wasn't completely ignorant of the wider culture, and she couldn't remember an opinion from either of her parents on the subject. So she waited until they were nearly through desert, when her mom started making sideways glances toward the front door and her dad started scraping the bottom of the small talk barrel.

“Okay,” she said, putting down her fork and taking her napkin out of her lap—table manners was something she didn't have to practice often, but her dad insisted. “I need to tell you something.”

Her dad looked relieved that someone else had taken the burden of conversation, leaning forward in his chair a little. Her mom gave her a smile. “What is it, honey?”

“I think--” No, that wasn't right. “I'm pretty certain I'm gay.”

Silence followed, and Raven found herself holding her breath.

Her dad spoke first. “I see,” he said. Nothing followed.

“Is...is that okay?” Ugh, she wanted to take that back. It sounded so weak, so uncertain. Her mom had always taught her to be true to herself, and that she didn't need anyone's permission to do that.

But she also didn't want her dad to hate her.

He shrugged. “If that's how you feel, then it's okay.”

Raven let out her breath in a whoosh, relief rushing through her. But he was only half of the equation. “Mom?”

Her mom raised her eyebrows at her. “Oh, are you telling me, too?”

“You're here,” said Raven, confused. “I meant for you to hear it, too.”

Her mom smiled at her indulgently. “But I already knew that, honey.”

“How?” Raven wasn't sure whether to feel relieved that her mom seemed okay with it, or embarrassed that she had done something to give away her sexuality to her mother of all people. She tried to think. She hadn't even kissed anyone in her whole life, though there had been a few close calls. None that had happened with her mom anywhere near.

“Every crush you've had has been on a girl,” said her mom. The smile was still on her face. “You never told me you had a crush, but a mother knows these things.”

“I didn't know,” her dad admitted. “But I have no problem with it.”

“Oh,” said Raven, and just like that, her big coming out moment was over.

“Well,” said her mom, standing up. “Anyone want coffee?”

Her dad also stood up. “I can make some.”

“I was thinking of going to that little coffee shop down the road,” said her mom, smile pasted on her face. “Let you and Raven catch up without me around.”

“Of course,” said her dad, and then her parents shook hands.

Her family was a little weird, Raven thought, but she wouldn't take any other.

This gave me a big smile. And reminded me of my coming out story.

Her family is super weird, but I'm really glad her coming out moment was so anticlimactic. Best kind.
