Midnight 6: Self-Defense
Author: Kat
Title: Self-Defense
Story: In the Heart - Spartacus AU
Colors: Midnight 6 (Furtive)
Supplies and Materials: Eraser (Spartacus AU), yarn (after galaxies collide), novelty beads (So what do I do with this?/This sudden burst of sunlight/And me with my umbrella/Cross-indexing every weatherman's report/I was ready for the downslide/But not for spring to well up. - "Stray Italian Greyhound", Vienna Teng)
Word Count: 161
Rating: PG-13
Summary: There are things Gina cannot admit.
Warnings: slavery, mentions of domestic abuse.
Notes: This is sort of a sideline to the really epic fic I'm still fighting with. *sigh*
There are things Gina cannot admit, now or ever.
The obvious things: what her husband really is, what her father has given her into. She knows, though she'll never say it out loud, that things should not be this way. She may be her husband's property, but a good steward cares for his things, and it is painfully obvious that he cares for her not at all.
How helpless she is. She knows this too but she dares not allow herself to think it. If she does, she will collapse, she knows it. She has to think that she can protect her children, her sister, her friends, and Ivy, who is...
Who is her third thing, her deepest secret, the thing she cannot allow herself to acknowledge.
In her house, under her gaze, Ivy opens up like a flower; tentative and still angry, but oh, so precious and lovely.
Gina turns her eyes away.
There are things she cannot even know.
