Ruth was the best of my life.

There was nothing tangled, nothing destined, nothing set in stone. She made me happy, she made me whole and, for as long as I was allowed to stay with her, I think I did the same.

And then Michaela came for me, and took me away--I should have known, I could never be good enough to stay, (though with her, I almost was). All I could do was wish we’d never met, that I had never hurt her, and watch as the web of loss that follows me everywhere closed around her.

Mariko brings out the best in me.

This is not to say that she doesn’t evoke my baser instincts as well--lust and wrath and envy and all the other so-called ‘deadly sins.’

But mostly, despite being Human (I have never been fond of Humans), she makes me something softer, kinder, better. And I know that I shouldn’t allow that, not with the War on the horizon, even by short-lived Human standards.

And yet…and yet, for something so fragile, so precious, so beloved, I cannot help myself. She makes me better, if only for those breathless moments when we’re together.

Humans tell stories of evil twins.

In most cases, it’s false. Not for you. I cannot deny that.

But I’ve watched you learn and grow and play together, and even I cannot tell which is which. So I pray you will fare better than your cousin, that your Human mother’s blood will free you from your destinies, that Gabriel is right: for our beloved children, we can be better.

Because, rest assured, my stolen nieces, my darling daughters: you are beloved. I dread nothing more than the day I will have to tell you who and what you really are.

oh man, the end is so good. I love the turn it takes when you know that the speaker is talking to someone.
